Hi,
I am looking for any summer programs in biological scientific research for rising juniors. Also, I am looking for research internships (maybe with biological companies) in the Bay Area.

I have only found the UCD YSP program and COSMOS.
I haven't found any research internships - I don't think I'll get into Stanford SIMR...

Should I just ask a professor at Stanford (closest university to home) for research? That way I don't need to ask for rec letters from my teachers. I'm not too sure if I would get rec letters from my teachers as I've suffered depression since freshman year...

If you’re a rising junior, I don’t think you qualify for SIMR anyway.

I would apply to YSP and COSMOS, as well as contact a couple of profs, to have a wider range of opportunities/chances.

The rec letter thing is a bit of a dilemma, but you should ask your teachers regardless. Are recs from counselors an option?

OK I made a mistake… YSP and COSMOS aren’t recommendation LETTERS they are forms that the teacher checks off.
I think I COULD ask a counselor for rec forms but I’m not really sure…

Well if you are either low income or underrepresented minority, then you can try the Stanford RISE internship. But you need to hurry because the deadline to turn in the application is Feb. 17.

I don’t think I’m low income; I only feel poor because I live where I live.
And I don’t think Asian is considered a minority.
But thanks anyways.

Asians are a minority (at least in the U.S.) but I doubt they would fall under the “underrepresented” category.

haha yeah, i really don’t think they’re under-represented in science… lol

So I guess I’ll just email the ~20 professors I found with interesting works/fields of biology. What if none of them accept though?
Because I know that a lot of them aren’t there most of summer…

You could try to get a job as a lab assistant or something (or even just a job at McDonald’s) or find a good volunteering opportunity, if all else fails.

Yeah, I found this interesting volunteering option close to me, it’s kind of shadowing a doctor as part of volunteering. But I think (I’ll have to ask) its a four hour shift once a week, so I’d get bored the other days of the week.

Hopefully I can get a professor to study with; otherwise I’ll do a TON of volunteering and get a Presidential Award. Summer is actually really useful for that purpose…
