Summer programs for writing and/or journalism

<p>Hi,
I am a high school junior and I'm researching summer programs and camps for summer 2015. Does anybody have any suggestions for writing (creative/collegiate/etc) or journalism camps that are either brilliant experiences or just look really good on applications?</p>

<p>I'd also prefer if they were outside of California (East coast would be lovely) and are longer than a week! But please feel free to mention any and all camps.</p>

<p>Thanks!</p>

<p>I would definitely suggest the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop. There are two sessions, each about 2 weeks long, held each summer at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Applications are open from January 8 to March 1. It’s a fantastic program, with a huge emphasis on creative writing and thinking. It’s competitive to be accepted - personally, I was waitlisted the first year I applied, and then accepted the next year. It’s a really great way to experience college life, as well as make new friends who are passionate about writing and push yourself creatively.</p>

<p>There’s AAJA J-Camp. Princeton also has one, although it’s only for low-income students. </p>

Programs such as Kenyon, Juniper Institute for Young Writers, Alfred University Creative Writing Camp, the Jonathon R. Reynolds Young Writers’ Workshop, Between the Lines, and Sewanee Young Writers’ Conference look fantastic. I’m looking for one this summer as well; good luck!

@ellaisall I would love to hear more about Kenyon, if you wouldn’t mind sharing you experience.

Hi @sanfrancsico‌ and @turnthepages‌, check out the Princeton Summer Journalism Program. It’s free, competitive (~10% acceptance last year), and also provides students with help applying to college next fall. It also also connects you to professional journalists, who help program alumni get internships once they’re in college: http://www.princeton.edu/sjp/

Feel free to DM questions or ask here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1714127-princeton-summer-journalism-program-application-is-out-free-program.html#latest

Penn state offers a multimedia and broadcast journalism camp that each last 6 days. All you have to do is sign up, although there is a certain number they accept.

Hey! Look at Rhodes College’s Summer Writing Institute. (http://www.rhodes.edu/English/4422.asp) It’s a relatively inexpensive two week residential program where you earn college credit and everyone is there to write, but there is no competitiveness.
I’m a high school senior who was in exactly the same position as you a year ago (journalist looking for writing camp).I randomly heard of Rhodes’ program through an email, and decided to apply based on the school’s ranking on the Prettiest College Campus list. Legit, I know. I applied and got in, but was pretty hesitant to send a deposit because there was ZERO information about this program anywhere besides the official website. I went anyways (even though none of the classes had to do with journalism).
It was AMAZING. I was placed in Expository Psychology, taught exclusively by the Neuroscience Director at the college - she was really passionate about her concentration. I learned a lot about research, neuroscience, writing, editing, the experience of writing for a college professor (NOTHING like high school) and dorm life - you live in the cozy dorms on campus. At the end, you get 2 hours of credit, written recommendation from your professor and papers to take home. And I made some great friends.
As you can tell, I can’t recommend this program enough. If you are interested… please please feel free to ask any questions you want

Asian American Journalist Association Jcamp (they select 42 kids for an all expense paid program. And you don’t have to be asian to do it, it’s very diverse!)

Al Neuharth Free Spirit program. I think they pick one kid from every state to participate in this all expense paid program in DC, and I think you also get scholarship money.

I found a whole page of them - http://www.schooljournalism.org/workshops/
