Summer Programs/Opportunities Geared Towards College Students?

Hello.

I am not a MT major but I am currently working on my BFA in Acting. My school has a BFA MT degree but it's not really looked at well. Anyway, I am looking for a few summer programs, opportunities or internships geared towards college students (and for performance, obviously). I know of CAP 21 but that's all I can really come up with. I would love some help gathering some ideas. Thank you!

I’m pretty sure the Broadway Artists Alliance has a college program. [Broadway Artists Alliance](http://broadwayartistsalliance.org/)

So does the Broadway Theatre Project

elbie - Will you be going to any of the regional/unified auditions? That is where a lot of college students pick up performance internships. I think most of the theatres that accept performance interns require an audition but some will accept video submissions as well.

Can you explain more about what is available at unifieds for current college students? We could get to LA, but I never considered that there would opportunities there for kids who are already in school.

Flossy - I think austinmtmom is talking about Strawhats or the Southeast theatre auditions.

Flossy - Sorry. As showmom noted I am talking about all the various regional theatre auditions like StrawHats, SETC, NETC, MWTA, etc. Lots of theatres there hiring for the summer season.

Oh well, I guess that eliminates Los Angeles. She already has a growing list of summer opportunities but I was hoping for another lead. Thanks for the quick clarification.

Is she going to any of the regional auditions? Getting those set up is almost like going through the college audition process again!

For the OP, if you’re looking for programs you pay to attend to gain training, besides CAP21, you could try Circle in the Square Theater School’s summer program for MT (very good) or Broadway Theater Project in FL (must audition for these). This is, of course, different than an internship or being cast in summer stock productions.

MY d gained a lot from CAP21 and BTP. But I have to say, know some dance before you go to BTP and you will get so much more out of it. The teachers were so great that it’s a shame to attend and be working on basics.

My daughter spent her first post-college summer at Shakespeare and Company’s Summer Training Institute in Lennox MA. She found the program incredible and unique to anything she has ever done before.

You may want to consider it.

Question of Elbie09. You are an acting BFA and you are looking for summer MT opportunities? Correct? The way I understand it, you want to be able to cross-over.

Yes. I have had vocal training and some dance training and I’ve done a lot of musical theatre. I want to strengthen my skills in MT.

Also, I have been looking into internships. Does anyone know of any performance/MT geared internships. I just want to collect a lot of information in case the internship I’m applying for right now doesn’t work out. Thank you!

Fordham has a summer MT program.

Also check out the Arts Bridge, (known last summer as The Arts Edge). They are a newer program, and just changed their name recently as they are expanding to work with more college age students, not just high school kids. My daughter attended last summer’s 2-week program in NYC for high school students. This program will be held in August again this coming summer. She is pursuing musical theater, and found it a very beneficial program. The downside is that housing is quite expensive and not included! Many of the students stayed at an educational housing facility recommended by the program director and rode the subway to the studio location. Also, you have to be 17 or older to stay in this student housing without a chaperone. Great program! She especially enjoyed the dance instruction, but it was a wonderful college audition prep program all around, as they worked on everything, and learned songs/monologues appropriate for audition use. Check out their website for details.
