Summer Programs- Overseas, etc.

Hello! I am a high school junior who is planning on auditioning for Theatre majors next year. Last summer I attended the MPulse Summer Program at University of Michigan. I was thinking about auditioning for it again this year, as I really enjoyed my experience there (to say the least; really it was the time of my life), but I want to look into some other programs as well. My dream program would be overseas, perhaps in London or Paris. Are there any summer theatre programs that offer this? I know that there are programs like People to People that offer trips overseas for American students, but I am interested in a theatre program first and foremost. Any suggestions would be great, particularly programs that are less expensive (a ridiculous hope with an out-of-country summer program, but I might as well try). Also, any other American program suggestions are welcome.

Hi, dreamerC–there’s a thread from mid-November about summer programs (don’t know how to copy the link, sorry!) and if you search the theatre-drama forum, you’ll find more info. We looked into one of the London programs (RADA Shakespeare course) but it was expensive and did not include provision for housing. There are lots of great options out there, though. My son loved the summer theater intensive at University of Minnesota, which was superb and was one of the least expensive programs we found. If you like Shakespeare, check out the offerings at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA–amazing instruction and great overall experience–my son did this one a couple of years ago. He’s a junior now too and for next summer is applying to programs at Carnegie Mellon, Boston U., and probably UArts in Philadelphia. Best of luck!

NYU used to have (2010) summer in NYC, Summer in Dublin, Summer in Paris- performance art related summer programs for rising seniors. This may be what you are looking for. It is on the expensive side though.

Dreamer, not overseas, but certainly international and the most prestigious Shakespeare Festival outside of the UK, have a look at the wonderful programs offered for students at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario.

My rising Junior is applying to Stratford… just started his app. I thought it was very reasonable price wise as well. There is also the British American Drama Academy Midsummer Conservatory- Oxford… looked amazing and my S would have definitely applied but you have to be 16 and my S won’t be 16 til September… so maybe next year.
