So basically I'm a junior in HS, and I've just found about RSI... and Nasa Sharp. I found out this month through this site... I can see its too late to apply to either of these.. it really saddens me I couldnt even try.. they seemed like such great programs.. I cant believe I missed them.. !!! Oh well life is like that. (What I didnt understand was how the people who applied to RSI always spoke of what SAT scores they had to get, I really dont get it.. how could you include such scores if you wouldnt even know prior to Feb???)

I mean.. this is what I really wanted to do in HS.. to see what it was actually like.. to work in the science field..

So now.. I'm wondering if there are any programs you guys might know of I could join during summer... I live in San Diego btw.

there's 2 things i can think of that u can do, although hopefully others have more ideas
1. u can apply to summer precollege programs, where u can take courses for college credits (eg Harvard SSP). Most of these are pretty easy to get into and have late deadlines.
2. u can email a couple profs at universities near u and set up a summer internship where u can work 1 on 1 on a project of ur choosing and possibly enter competitions like Intel/Siemens during ur senior year.

Hmm thanks for the ideas guys... btw becoming part of the Harvard SSP.. would be expensive correct? and wouldnt living in CA not play in my favor here?

Oh btw I'm only interested in astronomy but it would be just as good to do work in any other field.

Thanks so much Tahoe, I'm wondering if you're familiar with the Drexel program.... if not thats ok, I'll contact them myself. My question is whether the program requires you to provide your own housing.. or how does it work if you are an out of state student?

Drexel probably does not provide housing, since it's mainly for area high school students. I am not too familiar with the program, just by reputation. I am familiar with Boston University, and it is fantastic, because you will be living/learning with the same group of kids (like summer camp), they provide recreational activities for the participants and housing. It's hard to get into, so I would get your application out soon. Your interest in Astronomy might be attractive to them. Do you have any experience in it? Meanwhile, if this program interests you, you should download the teacher recommendations right away, and give them to your teachers to get that process started.

Hi,
There are some wonderful research programs that offer fully funded fellowships (other than RSI), but you missed the deadline for them. Clark Scholars at Texas Tech, Simons at Stony Brook, NY come to mind. Perhaps BU offers financial aid. Why don't you give them a call?

Go to UCSD, they have a good program. Especially the biology part is extremely good, that's what I've heard from some students who have been accepted this year. Not so expensive, and not far away from your home. USC, UCLA and Standford are also considerable.
