Summer Programs: Who rates these?

My kid (class of 2013) recently got accepted into what we thought was a prestigious summer music program. We thought it was competitive too. We were ecstatic... Then we got the bill. How do we know whether a program is prestigious? Who evaluates? We jumped through some hoops before learning the final decision, but like USA Today's "Best Colleges," does anyone group rate college summer programs? Summer music programs?

I don’t know if someone “rates” them, but most everyone knows the prestigious ones. RSI, Ross, etc…
Usually the free ones are the prestigious ones. I don’t know about summer music programs though…But I’m sure the same principle applies. Try to keep it under $1,000 or so.
EDIT: Also, the programs that have a limited number of spaces (20 students) are sometimes prestigious too.

Yes, this can get pricey. Professionally trained art and music enthusiasts, where are you? Are we talking pricey or have I been hoodwinked?

I’m in no way musically inclined (or gifted), but I take choir for my fine art elective. My teacher is in charge of Main Street Singers which is a very prestigious high school choir group (so far every senior has gotten a scholarship to a LAC). Half the people on Main Street auditioned for this summer camp and all but one got in. I’ve talked to some and they said that it was free and there were only 50 spots available. Apparently they only try out for the ones their voice teacher suggests (don’t get drawn in by mail in offers!). So if your kid is serious about music, maybe you can ask his private instructor?

Thanks. How long is the program length? The programs that I am particularly referring to are national programs of 4-8 weeks duration. Often, students are housed in dormitories. Usually housing, meals, and most EC are included. The competition to get into these programs is on a national level, with some applicants coming from abroad to the US to participate. So now that I’ve added a little more detail as to what’s included in this rather high fee, is anyone familiar with this type of summer program, and if so, what has been ?your experience with them? The question is also one about ECs. This one can be expensive and very time consuming, i.e., you need time to practice and several EC’s just won’t give the time to you.
