Summer Programs

What should I do this summer?
Should I:

  • intern at Stanford for some computer science research (Human Computer Interaction)
  • work at a startup (my mom’s company)
  • work at McDonald’s, Walmart, etc.
  • or just stay home and code

What are some good summer opportunities?

Background

  • Junior
  • Started a business, interested in startups
  • applying to college as senior

How about a bit of all? You have a long summer, plenty of time.

How would I do two internships though

Do whatever would be more fulfilling to you. Don’t look at it through the eyes of college admissions.

I noticed that you had two computer-science related possibilities for the summer. Perhaps you could do both the internship at Stanford for computer science research and practice your coding skills further during free time at home? If you’re really interested in computer science, you could develop it to be your hook.

If you also want to work at your mom’s startup company, it would also depend on the hours per week commitment of the Stanford research if you plan on doing both, and if the internship is Mon-Fri or includes weekends too.

I would do 1 & 4 if finances allowed you to. Where 4 involves some cool project you’d like to code up but didn’t have time during the year.

Thanks guys. I have a question: How much coding skills do you need to do computer science research?
