Summer Programs

Does anyone know what summer programs look really good on your Naval Academy Application?

Nass........

I'll second the above^^^^

Besides NASS, I would guess they would just want summer programs that use your talents or that have to do with what you are interested in. Don't really worry about which ones look best for your application, just go to what you are interested in, and your application will be fine.

They would seem to like American Legion boys/girls state programs apparently. They count it distinctly in the profile.

NASS, itself, doesn't make your application look better than others. Realize that MIDN don't get into USNA based soley on NASS. NASS can help and can hurt your application, though. There is a lot more on the application that is far more important than going to summer seminar.

Furthermore, don't join an activity because you think it will increase your odds!!! Join an activity because YOU want to.

Your summer might consist of going to New Orleans to provide relief, it might mean you are training your behind off to be successful in a fall sport, and/or it might mean you go hiking for a few weeks. Don't alter what you want to do in the summer, so significantly, that you don't enjoy your life.

From the way the question was posed, it seems like you are interested only in doing the programs for the sake of the application. I am not pointing fingers at all, I am just trying to emphasize that all of the activities you are involved in needs to be from yourself.

If you asked an admissions counselor this question, they would probably tell you to involve yourself in leadership and athletic activities. They wouldn't tell you what activity to do because of the diversity aspect that I mentioned above; everyone is unique in a way!

"NASS can help and can hurt your application, though"

What does that mean?

The Mids that lead you during NASS write up a report for you while you are there, so if you come and **** everyone off, then admissions will get a bad report about you.

Also I know it sounds like I'm doing it just for the sake of application, but I participate in Summer activities every year, if I don't I'm bored all summer. The reason I asked the question is because I often have to choose between one or the other. I probably should have been more specific. I do not know if NASS and Boys State will overlap, and if it comes to it, I was wondering which one I should do.

IF it comes to it, call USNA admissions and see if they will change your session... with a good reason, I don't see why they wouldn't if there is space available.

don't overlook the opportunity to work over the summer....

holding down a job, being responsible, getting a A+ evaluation and letter of recommendation from your Boss can be VERY POWERFUL in demonstrating responsiblity and accountability.... and at the same time it can provide you with some play money, or better yet, savings to put towards your admission fee at USNA. Which is not to say that volunteering is not top notch either....but do something productive with your summer, and I am not talking surfing, sunbathing or working on your tan!!! ;)
