Summer RADA/College Abroad programs

I am most interested in hearing from anyone who did the summer RADA program this year or last year. I am particularly interested in hearing from college students.

My D will be going to UCLA which does not permit junior year abroad for its actors, so going to a summer program abroad is very much on her mind. Given that she saved us a TON of money by going to UCLA instead of CAL ARTS or EMERSON or CCM, we said we would send her.

Questions:

When did you apply? Between what summer (Fresh/soph? Soph/Jr.?)

How hard was it to get in?

Was it worth it?

How long was the program?

Price estimate?

If you didn't do RADA, but did another summer acting program abroad that you thought was great, what about that?

Hey chrissyblu,

I’m actually going be doing RADA’s Summer School program that is starting in a little under two weeks. It’s a month long, and it doesn’t have an audition process. You might want to remind me in a month or so, but I’ll try to remember to give you an update on how it goes. NCSA doesn’t have a study abroad, so I have similar interest.

Son of tranquil, are you doing the summer school month that starts mid-July? My son is in the same program. We’ve heard great things about the school and are hoping it is all that, and then some :)

Yes I am, I leave for London on Friday, and am very, very excited!

My daughter is also planning to apply to these programs for next summer and will be weighing their merits with other programs she will likely learn about at school. Let’s keep this thread going anytime we get some solid information.

Anyone have anything new to add? Anyone come back from any summer programs they wish to share? This is particularly for those of you already in college.

Just an update!

Just to clarify my current position, I was just at a BA program and I am transferring to the BFA Professional Actor Training program at NCSA.

I am currently at RADA’s summer school program, which mainly focuses on shakespeare and I am absolutely loving it. I can’t believe I’m already finishing my second week.

The staff is amazing and so is the curriculum. We have classes in Voice, Speech, Movement, Dance in the world of shakespeare, Stage Combat, Stage Fighting, Improv, Verses, Sonnets, and Alexander technique. You also have 3 hours of rehearsing scenes days a week. Class is from 10am-6pm monday through friday, so it is true conservatory style.

For anyone interested in Shakespeare, and would like to study abroad, I highly, highly, highly recommend RADA’s summer school program. You don’t have to audition, but they truly provide you with high end training in acting Shakespeare, as well as really teaching you how to better control your movement and posture.

Another great benefit of the program is the diversity. I have met people from the US, England, Ireland, Holland, Wales, Spain, France, Belgium, India, Barbados, Germany, and even Tokyo. I also heard Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame did this program last year.

This has been a great opportunity for me since I will not be able to study abroad, and I hope it will provide great times for those in the future!

I’ll be glad to answer any questions about the program.

chrissy, I know of a very talented young man who is spending some time this summer at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I could attempt to get in touch with him if you’d like some information.

Skipsmom, please let us know about you son’s experience, when you have a chance.

How soon before the summer do you have to apply to RADA? I heard you have to apply very early. My D is very concerned about this and wants to stay on top of it.
How many weeks is the program?

If you’re interested in this particular program, then you really don’t have to sign up to far in advance. I didn’t sign up till’ late May and they still had room in accommodations. From what I know the program doesn’t fill up but room in the Astor College Dorms does, so your daughter should sign up as soon as she definitely knows she would like to go. No need to be concerned, and the application process is easy as well. No audition needed- you just need to submit your application, references, a very short (100-300) essay about your experience with acting and Shakespeare, and a passport sized photo.

The program is about four weeks long.

Oh and by the way even though I signed up pretty close to when the program started there was still room in the dorms, so there is really no pressure.

She will be very excited to hear this. She heard something much different from someone else. Thanks for the info… :)
