Current students, please share your experiences regarding this. Do you get an assignment every year, or just before the first year? And what type of reading do you get?

Dont read it, waste oftiem

It's just before your first year. This past year, our book was King Leopold's Ghost, by Adam Hochschild. The book was actually quite interesting, if dense at times. However, all you do with it is discuss it once and see a related speaker during orientation, so don't feel like you need to read the book 3 times and take copious notes or anything like that.

I wouldn't bother with the classwide assigned reading, although you may want to read the ones assigned for specific classes. Either way, you can get pretty much everything you need to know out of them with just a quick read in the car or on the bus/train/plane, or even after you get here.
