I was told that for those students who did not attend Orientation, the Summer Reading Project book was mailed out last Friday. If you don't receive it in the next week or so, call Orientation at 504-865-5180.

Good information Vitrac. I also saw a story posted that they are adding more “meat” to the summer reading project. [Tulane University - Faculty discussion to enhance Reading Project experience](<a href=“| tulane”>http://tulane.edu/news/newwave/071613_reading_project.cfm) Note that Melissa Harris-Perry will be leading one of the discussion panels in the fall. This topic certainly falls into Prof. Perry’s area of expertise. Having the author come should also be very interesting. She sounds like she has some controversial positions. It should be really eye-opening for most of the students.

Thanks for that information. We did receive the student orientation book in the mail yesterday and I was a bit surprised the book wasn’t in there with it - seems silly to mail it out separately.

I’m so jealous! I love her. Once again, I want to switch places with my son … ;)

He’s away working as a camp counselor but he told me last night he’s halfway through the book and loves it.

Mavitale: I’m impressed with your son’s diligence. My son is steadfastly ignoring the book until the last minute! I guess he’s still, at least mentally, a second semester H. S. Senior.

Mine too NewTrierDad! Mine said he is bringing it to read on our family vacation in August. I am trying to look at the bright side, it will be fresh in his mind as he heads into the discussion in his Tides Class!

Oh believe me… I WAS SHOCKED that he’s been reading the book. (I even asked him twice if he was telling the truth). But he’s at camp until the 14th and then has to leave on the 19th for the NOLA Experience, so I was very nervous that he’d leave it for that week. We’ve got a lot to do in 5 days when he gets home.

I’ve already stolen my son’s copy to read before he does! Melissa Harris-Perry is one of the reasons that Tulane was such a draw for my Son. I hope that he gets to interact with her throughout his time at Tulane. The book was actually brought up in one of my online forums as a good read in the midst of all that is happening in Florida.

I called Orientation again today. In fact, the books were mailed July 12 under a separate mailing from the orientation materials. I was told they should arrive in 3-10 business days from that date.

So, is there something they have to do IN ADDITION to reading the book before school starts? On the checklist in the orientation book it says: “…and be sure to remind your student to complete the new program.” ???

That might be referring to the online “course” at mystudentbody.com:

This was in my child’s email last week:
" All incoming new students are required to complete this comprehensive online education course to learn more about alcohol and university resources. Learn how you can make well-informed decisions to keep you safe while here at Tulane.

Check your Tulane email account on July 24 for instructions on how to access the online course at mystudentbody.com. You must complete the course by August 19. The course will not open until July 24."

No, this was in direct relation to the reading project. It’s in the little booklet in the checklist of things to do before school starts.

Ah, I found the page you are reading from. Thanks. Have not heard about “the new program” related to the reading project.

Could it be related to Fallenchemist’s Post #2? Online discussions on Blackboard. I saw YouTube videos related to prison conditions on it also.

Ah, yes of course… I hadn’t clicked through. For some reason I thought it was about discussions that will happen after school starts. My son is going to have a lot to do in the 5 days between getting home from his camp job and leaving for NOLA on the 19th… oy.
