Just curious what other school’s summer reading is for incoming freshmen/3rd formers/whatever you call them. The Hill does not have their up yet, although it should be up by the end of the week.
Ah, the summer reading thread…
I think CK has yet to finish his summer reading from freshman year.
My kid read all six books last year in the hope that enough others would do the same that there would be a trip to Hershey Park as a reward. Didn’t happen. At least he got to go there at the end of the year with the band.
NMH has the incoming freshmen reading The 10 O’Clock Question for discussion, The Girl Who Fell from the Sky (with paper) and some poetry. I’m hoping he will capitalize on school habits before summer mode kicks in too much and get it done early. (Yeah, I know I’m only fooling myself…)
@fullofbs beat me to it plus two poems. I ordered the above two books and they arrived three weeks ago, gathering dust on the night stand. Hopefully DS2 won’t lose them by August!
Our local public school where DS1 goes gave “The Alchemist” which DS2 read during the 8th grade PARCC test after he was done. The rising juniors got “Into the Wild.” I plan to read it during the summer. I usually read all their school books and used to critique their assignments but the critiquing part is no longer welcome.
@twinsmama, that’s funny. DS was looking at the assignment and the “Dean’s Challenge” last night and wondered if enough others would do it. I told him I thought they would, with the Hershey Park incentive, he said “no way”. So, I’m not confident I will get him to read the 5, but at least the required 2 are interesting. (Boys in the Boat is the all-school req’d)
@hellomaisy, The challenge is easier this year; maybe more kids will do it. Or could it be that many of them are so overprivileged that a trip to Hershey Park isn’t an incentive? Sigh. Anyway, I’ll bet my daughter will be annoyed that Animal Farm is assigned for 10th grade. She just finished it for her 9th grade English class.
My teacher didn’t have us read Animal Farm this year, but my ELA teacher had me read it in eighth grade for independent reading. I liked it, but I didn’t get any of the historical context.
Speaking of independent reading… he also gave me Dorian Gray. I hated it until the very last paragraph.
I don’t know about summer reading for Solebury, but I saw some good reads on my current school’s list that I might just have to read anyway.
@stargirl3: From your mention of Where’d You Go Bernadette awhile back on another thread, I read it and couldn’t put it down. What a fun read, even if they got Choate all wrong.
@ChoatieMom The author went to Choate! My guess is that she referred to it as “Choate Rosemary” because she attended right after the merge, and they must have been emphasizing it. But yeah, she didn’t paint it in the best light.
@gusmom2000 Teacher had me read 1984 by George Orwell and create a Literature Entry for every Chapter. Somewhere around 20 pages, no reward Just a triple zero if you didn’t do it by the deadline.
Only one book. I’m disappointed. All The Light We Cannot See. Anyone read it?
All The Light We Cannot See is a fabulous book. Enjoy
I have to read three books for Loomis, but when I went out to Barnes and Noble with my dad to pick them up, they didn’t have any of them! It was kinda strange as one of the books is 1984 by George Orwell (A pretty famous book, no?) and they didn’t even have it! The other two books I have to read are The Sixth Extinction and Bel Canto.
They also have a “recommended” list and my favorite book of all time (Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell) was suggested. It was nice to see a familiar title on the list.
I read *Where’d You Go Bernadette * yesterday (yeah, it is not a difficult read.) I’m glad that I wasn’t the only one noticing the glaring inaccuracies @ChoatieMom
@historygeek40 - Bel Canto is a great book!
We spent 25+ minutes in English discussing summer reading (because my teacher rocks). One of the books on our recommended list, Briar Rose, is also on Solebury’s. I’m pretty sure my required book is Maus I, which I keep meaning to read (it’s on my bookshelf…).
@doschicos So I’ve heard! I can’t wait to get into them a bit more, but with work this summer (Blegh!) I don’t have too much time.
