do all of the schools assign summer reading?

hopefully not

SPS assigns "The Odyssey"

I think a lot of them do...I know mine does. I had to read 2 books for english, 1 choice book, and 1 book for AP Euro last summer.

AWW Hockey kid!
I loved that book! The greatest epic ever written (aside fron Forrest Gump...)!

For NMH last summer, my son read two books (Catcher In the Rye and The Bean Trees) and wrote a paper on each (the prompt was supplied), as well as two poems with a paper on those as well.

I think every school assigns at least 2 books, and you have to do some kind of report, either a paper or sometimes it can be a collage or another form of expression other than a paper.

keylyme, what did your son have to do for the summer going into freshman year?

What I posted above; my son is currently a freshman.

Groton sends out a list of books that teacher reccomend, but none are actually required.
The school gives every vacation, including summer, off from any school assignments which is really nice!
The books on the list are good though
!

Every school I researched over the summer (around 20) had a summer reading list for every grade including incoming freshman. Most had one or two required books and then one or two that you could pick from a list.

Exeter doesn't have summer reading...

I didn't look at Exeter or Andover. Surprising that they don't.

are you sure exeter doesnt have summer reading?

Tabor does. They normally assign 2 or 3 to read for each English grade and then one book that the whole school has to read(faculty included). The whole school book normally has a "community service" message which the school adopts for the upcoming year.

Hill also assigns a summer reading list: one year it was Catcher in the Rye among others...have not received a list from Deerfield, yet...

Exeter does not have summer reading. It's in the Parent's handbook on the site.

sweet. you just made my day =]

Blair has summer reading for English but no written assignment. There is usually a book assigned for History, and there are a few very short writing assignments for the foreign language.
