Summer Reading!

Read anything good lately? I have some books lying around but I'm not sure what I want to read...and I'm sure I'll get to all of them eventually. I'm just looking for an interesting read right now. Any suggestions?

1984 is great. I also finished In Cold Blood By Truman Capote which was also very good. I read the short novel Death of Ivan Ilych By Tolstoy and it was alright.

My list to read so far:
Breakfast At Tiffanies, Capote
Clockwork Orange
Fahrenheit 451
Truman by David McCulough
Player Piano by Vonnegut
Othello by Shakespeare
Finish the last 3 books in Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Series (i have read the first two)

thats all I got for now…

I’m currently reading Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita”–bizarre read.
Laurie Halse Anderson’s “WinterGirls”
Cecily-whatever’s “The It Girl,” six. (Guilty pleasure.)
And Eoin Colfer’s “Airman”

I always read more than one book at once, I’ve never been able to just read one book without picking up another. Poor attention span, I guess.

I’m rereading all of Harry Potter, and will be moving on to “100 Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Marquez and “Einstein’s Dreams” by Tom Lightman.

I’m going to overdose on Malcolm Gladwell this summer.

There are some good book suggestions on collegeboard.

So far I’ve read:

The Word for World Is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Michael Chabon

I would really recommend all three. The Word for World Is Forest is a winner of the Hugo Award for Best Novella, Flowers for Algernon won a Nebula Award for Best Novel, and The Yiddish Policemen’s Union won both the Nebula and Hugo Awards for Best Novel.

Those are 3 books that I’ve just read, theres tons of other suggestions I could make if you want. =)

Flowers for Algernon is one of my favorite novels. I fell in love with it!

Oh god, don’t read Fahrenheit 451. Just don’t. Maybe it’s got some literary merit but I STRONGLY disagree - I hated the book! I suggest Brave New World if you’re looking for a slightly sci-fi good book!
Also, the last 3 books in HHGttG are ok at best. The first two are way better (and that’s a fairly common opinion). Still worth reading I guess, but I would put them lower on your list, you know?
Poisonwood Bible is a great summer read.

I liked Fahrenheit 451. I read it for freshman english so perhaps I should go read it again, but the concept and idea was really cool.

My school reading list for this year includes
100 Years of Solitude - Marquez
Diplomacy - Kissinger
Plan B 3.0 - Brown
and I’ll probably read a few on my own as well.

I have so much summer reading for school there’s not a lot of time for personal reading. Literally I have 1300+ pages to read for one class.

Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis
Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach
C++ Primer Plus
Beginning Unix
Learning Perl

FUN!

I read poisonwood and brave new world already. I am reading 451 right now and like the beginning. I wouldn’t be narrow minded enough to not read a book because I don’t agree with it.

^ I think he meant that he disagrees with the claim that F451 has literary merit, not with the actual message of the books.

Exactly  I completely support the message of the book - and reading banned books in general - but I was simply voicing my opinion that I did not enjoy the book itself. The writing style wasn’t for me (then again, I read it sophomore year with a horrible teacher). I just didn’t like it. Sorry for the confusion!

Ethan Frome
A Separate Piece

Not too good, but required.
