Summer Requirement

My son received the following email from UF and my question is - since Bright Futures and Federal Student loans and Parent Plus loans are only for Fall/Spring semesters. I will have money in the summer - but it was supposed to go for his Sophomore college year. how do I pay for this?

"Welcome to your first semester at the University of Florida! I hope that
your fall semester is off to a great start as you settle in and become a
member of the Gator Nation.

As you have learned from meeting with your Preview advisor, there are many
academic requirements that affect your progress through the University of
Florida curriculum. The summer enrollment requirement is one of those.
You may read this requirement in the 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog:

Students who enter a state university in Florida with fewer than 60
credits must earn at least nine credits before graduation during summer
terms at State University System institutions. Credit earned through any
of the study-abroad programs approved by UF, during a summer term, counts
toward satisfaction of the summer term enrollment requirement."

Your first paragraph is confusing. If the Bright Futures and Federal Student Loans are for Fall and Spring only, why do you say you will have money in the summer but it is for Fall.

I can only speak for Bright Futures, as my daughter doesn’t have any other aid other than the Florida Prepaid. For your son, he or you will have to pay for the Summer hours since it doesn’t look like you have Prepaid.

Sorry I meant that I will have my own saved money in the summer for his sophomore year. I’ve been doing a little digging around and I guess maybe you can get a parent plus loan for summer. I did not know that. Might be what I have to do.

You don’t have to do a summer at UF if you have some AP credits.

From <a href=“Office of the University Registrar”>Office of the University Registrar;

Students entering UF beginning with Summer B 2002 are EXEMPT from the summer requirement under the following condition: they have earned nine hours of credit from accelerated mechanisms, such as the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or approved dual enrollment programs.

Oh well he has lots of AP credits. I’ll have to check on this.

If you have 9 DE or IB or AP credits you do not need to go summer.

To be honest, by the time he graduates he may want to stay and spend a summer. But if he has AP credits he is fine. And, he can be a transient student and take summer classes at a U near home. Community college/state college does not count, but any other state U does. He just fills out a form early in spring semester to request this and get courses approved.

I just read the email again at it says that there has been a legislative change as of July 2011 and that the waiver for summer requirements is no longer given.

"As you have learned from meeting with your Preview advisor, there are many

This current language is the result of legislative action revising this
regulation through House Bill 7151, effective July 1, 2011. This bill
eliminated previous summer term enrollment requirement exemptions.
Because this change occurred recently, your SASS degree audit at the
beginning of the semester may have reflected that you were eligible for
these prior exemptions. Your audit now has been revised to reflect this
change."

It looks to me like they no longer will waive the summer requirement with AP, IB, and DE credits. That’s going to be an awful lot of kids taking summer classes now. I don’t understand how they can make this a requirment.

I know! That’s like an extra $2000 per year (tuition and dorm only) to have the student attend summer session. I don’t know if one can realistically take 9 credits in a summer term so that means multiple or at least two summer terms. Ugh.

I’m UPSET.
