Is there any exemption for the 9 credit Summer term requirement to graduate at UF? I come from a low income family and I would not be able to afford summer unless I take out loans to cover everything (meals, housing, tuition, books, etc.)
If you graduated high school with 60 Credit hours of college coursework or more, than you are exempt from this requirement. If not, then you aren’t exempt. Remember that you can also take online courses to full fill this requirement, so housing and meal plans may not be needed, which lowers the cost a little.
Woah. I had no idea this was even a thing. It’s a shame they cap the credits you carry from high school to 45. I’m in the same boat as you. Getting 9 credits during the summer is going to be a huge pain…
I read that you can study abroad to not have to do the summer requirement but do they mean you can study abroad any semester or you have to study abroad in the summer specifically?
There are some exemptions to the rule. You can also apply for a waiver (including one based on financial hardship or summer internships).
.
FYI: Bright Futures may be available for summer 2016…
@Gator88NE Do you think 18k household income qualifies as financial hardship? And those 75 credits must be achieved prior to freshmen year?
I’m don’t know what qualifies, but if you are being awarded a Pell Grant, I would think your chances are good.
The 75 credits don’t have to be achieved prior to your freshmen year. I would think that requirement is in place so folks don’t try to apply for the waiver until they are at least juniors or even seniors.
@Gator88NE Where did you hear about Bright Futures and summer 2016? Would that be available for students who currently have bright futures or is it just incoming freshmen?
It was a proposal made by the Gov Scott propose the expansion in January, but I’m not sure if it passed the state legislature budget in July. I’m thinking not…but it’s worth keeping an eye on…
