Summer Research at NCSU -- general ?s

Hi,

Son will be at NCSU for a REU program this summer (May 29 - Aug 3) and is really looking forward to it. I'm just hoping someone can give me a little information. He will be housed in Wolf Village and since he will be coming from OOS will not have a car. I understand Wolf has kitchens and we were wondering if there are any markets close by that he could access.

It looks like taking a taxi from the airport will not cost a lot, anyone have experience with this?

Also, IF time permits what should he really try to make sure and experience while he is there?

Greatly appreciate any information.

NCSU had ZipCars now that students can rent to run errands and also the college bus system…the Wolfline. You may need to call the transportation office (Google “NC State University transportation office”) for details of the summer bus schedule. All over the NCSU campus there are C-Stores. These are mini convenience stores. You can get milk, cereal bread, frozen dinners, etc from a C-Store. There are also some fast food type places on campus plus Fountain Dining Hall.

The nearest grocery store will prob. be on Western Blvd. (busy four lane rd. that borders the campus) I know there is a Kmart down there and a Food Lion (big chain gro. store in NC). There are also restaurants within walking distance. Hillsborough St. which also borders the campus has lots of student eateries right across from campus.

He might want to consider getting a bicycle once arriving in Raleigh.

My DD has used American Concierge (1-888-884-7015) for transportation to and from the airport. They operate 24/7, but call in advance to arrange for pick-up. We have been happy with their reliable and reasonably priced service.

Thank you for responding so quickly.

He got the zipcar membership for school, we’ll see if he can use the same account for NC.
It’s nice to know he can easily pick up basics, breakfast/snacks to keep on hand.

I will check with American concierge particularly since he gets in so late, never know how many taxis will be on hand and what the competition for them will be.

The campus also looks pretty large so we imagine he’ll need to use the Wolfline to get from Wolf Village to south Centennial campus for engineering.

Thanks again for the information and if there’s anything else we should know please post.

There’s a Fresh Market and a Harris Teeter in Cameron Village just north of campus. [Welcome to Cameron Village](http://www.shopcameronvillage.com/)

The State Farmer’s Market is on the corner of Centennial Parkway and Lake Wheeler Road. He’d need a car or bike to get there, but it’s not far from campus. Not sure if he could take a bus there or not.
