I'll be working this summer with a Physics Professor at a local Univ. doing research. Today, my first day working with him, I found out that I most likely won't be paid at all. So, if I do it all volunteer this summer, would it be considered somewhat community service?

I'm not doing it at all for this reason (I'm doing it because I love Physics), but I'm just curious. Thanks.

i guess it could count it as community service... however, i don't think it counts double hours for both "research" and "community service"

No, it's more like an unpaid internship. You aren't serving the community, so you shouldn't get service hours.

OT: What topic are you working on Fanda, if not a secret? Its interesting to me, since I like physics as well.

No, it's an unpaid internship as oneo said

"Doing research with a local prof" is such a commonly over-used activity that the word "research" may appear to be somewhat vague. What type of research are you doing? What results are you expecting? How does your research contribute/affect our society? Why do you think that YOUR research is more unique than what others have done? What is your objective/purpose of doing research "with a local prof"?- Is it simply something to put down on your college app, or something you are truly interested in and you plan to investigate at a deeper magnitude?

I recommond that everyone ask these questions first before they go for something as vague as a "research with a local prof." Good luck with your internship. :)

This page is a little old, but all the information is still relevant. I'll be working with the Professor on three different projects:
