Has anyone attended Paces’ Summer Scholars Institute? I’d really love some feedback about the program. Is it really hard academically with essays and tests, etc. or more of an overview of the “major”? Is it hard to get accepted? Do you have a roommate? How many people attend? Do you have freedom to get out in the city and tour around a bit?

Any info anyone could provide would be so appreciated!

I attended last summer. There is no academic work, strictly major oriented. In the morning we had acting with a 2012 MT graduate, dance for the first week with another graduate (the 2nd week was with a dance faculty member because our first instructor had to leave for the tour of West Side Story), then we got a lunch break, and class with Amy Rogers. You do a mock audition the 1st day of class, she assigns you a song, and you work on them throughout the course, until the “final” audition. You also get one private voice lesson with a graduate of the program. There were about 20 (give or take a few, my memory isn’t so sharp) MT majors, and a small handful of business and psychology majors. I don’t think it’s too hard to get in. I had one roomate who was a psychology major. There isn’t a ton of free time to go around - you get lunch to go wherever you want, but there are a lot of group activities at night - movies, theater, museums, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge…we saw Jersey Boys with the program last year, and us MT majors organized 2 other trips to Bring It On and Dogfight on our own, with our two counselors (both were acting majors). I loved my time in the program, and I did learn a lot, but it wasn’t as intense as I expected, and we only walked away with one new song, and some work on another song of our own. If you’re looking for a college audition prep program, I would not only rely on this, as much as I enjoyed it. Being in the city for 2 weeks, learning from the staff, and meeting new people was an AMAZING experience. Message me if you want some more personal details!

Thank you so much for the response! I can’t pm as I’m too new of a member so hopefully you will see this!

I’m interested in technical theater but since they don’t offer that, I was thinking of applying for Psychology or business just so I can get a real feel for living in the dorms, the classrooms, being in NY, etc. (I don’t perform even though I love musical theater) But since those aren’t my “real” interest, I was afraid it’d be too academic. Did you see your Psychology roommate doing papers, reading textbooks, etc at night?

Did you feel you got a good feel of the school itself and some of the staff? Do you feel it would make a difference if applying to Pace that you attended this program?
