summer school and financial aid

I know I should probably schedule an appointment with financial aid at some point, but I want to ask if summer session is ever feasible for out-of-state low-income students? I mean, at 800 dollars a credit hour for OOS students, I see myself taking out 7200 dollars in loans for one season just to pay for one season of summer school. AccessUVA doesn't give grants for summer sessions right??

I just want to get some annoying prereqs out of the way so I can move on to the fun stuff early. =(

I received financial aid my first summer, but most of it was in the form of additional loans. To be eligible, I had to attend school full-time and I had to have a good reason. "So I can move on to fun stuff" won't cut it.

Keep in mind that unless you live off-grounds and have a car, summer school at UVa is pretty miserable. The dorms are expensive, the dining hall (Newcomb) isn't open half the time and the menu is pretty much pizza and salad. Bus service is sporadic or non-existent.

You'll be better off living at home, get a summer job, and smoke some salmon and make some moose jerky for the winter like other Mainers.

Do the loans taken in the summer apply to your loan cap? If so, I might as well take it, as those would have been loans that would have been incurred anyway during my four years, right?

It is so I can move on to the fun stuff, but the fun stuff in time, so I have time to take the higher-level cogsci, ecology, chemistry and physics courses that I want to by fourth year, since I know I won't have the chance to take some of them in grad school(?).

I'm already overloading this semester (22 credits; my gf is doing it too), and the workload is surprisingly quite manageable. I suppose constantly overloading might be a slightly more stressful but more financially feasible option?

Also, how does the housing picture change if you have say, a summer undergrad research position?

It's the beginning of the semester remember that. ;) I'm at 19 this semester, so I'm in a similar boat. It seems easy right now, but it'll get much less manageable soon.

As for all of the info you need regarding fin aid, I would call the office or go see someone. Seriously, there should be someone in the fin aid office just for you gals because of the number of questions you have lol. ;)
