Summer School at CC

As an incoming freshman, what summer school classes are recommended to take?
Basically classes that would fulfill the diversity & language requirement, correct?
Because GE's cannot be fulfilled at a CC after high school graduation right?

Also, for incoming freshman, do we need to fill out the request for pre-approval to transfer coursework to USC? I've heard we don't, but I just wanted to make sure!

Anyone else planning to take summer school at a CC? or elsewhere?

It is really important that you get your com. college courses pre-approved so that you don’t waste your time. I suggest you go over the list of gen. ed. required classes (different categories), find out if you have fulfilled any of them via AP tests, and take one or two classes which will meet the gen. ed. requirements because you can only take those classes BEFORE starting USC.

Oh! So for example, a history class and such would be considered the GE for Category I and that would fulfill the GE requirement?

No, as an incoming freshman, you would not have to complete a course approval form if you are taking classes at a CC. To look for classes that fulfill GEs and other requirements, you would look at the community college’s articulation agreement with USC. By the way, I verified this with my regional admissions counselor as well as some other people working in admissions.

You would be allowed to take GEs as an incoming students because by that time, you would have already graduated from high school.

Here’s a website that should help you (it says that it’s for spring admits, but it’s for fall admits as well):

[USC ARR : Articulation : Spring Admits](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/spring_admits.html)

Thanks nhsharvard!

For classes taken at a CC that do not fulfill any GE or other requirements, they become elective credits. What’s the importance of elective credit? Earlier registration time?

According to the office of registration, classes that don’t fulfill GE credits give earlier registration times as they are also considered transferred units.

They might fulfill prerequisites depending on the department.

Also, you can take these classes online through a community college as long as the CC has an articulation agreement and the class you’ll be taking is not a language class nor a science lab section (the lecture can be taken online).

I’m doing the same thing during the summer. I’ll be taking classes for Category 2 and 3. I might try to fit in a Category 2 class, too. Unfortunately, I can’t take care of the writing requirement because most CCs require a semester of English before that, but if you can, you should try to take care of the writing requirement.

Sounds good to me!
