Summer school to get ahead?

I want to take AP Chemistry next year as a junior, but the requirement is to take honors chemistry before AP Chem :/ Right now I'm in AP Biology, and as a freshman I was in honors physics. I'm thinking of taking honors chemistry in summer school so I can take AP Chem next fall, but I'm worried it will look bad when I apply to college.
Have any of you taken a summer course? If so, do you think it was worth it? One of my friends retook honors geometry last year, and she said it was extremely fast paced and harder than geometry over the school year. I'm worried that if I take honors chemistry this summer it'll be too fast for me and I'll fail. I really like science and do well in school, but I've never taken a class over the summer and don't know what to expect. I also want to study for the SAT over the summer...not sure if it'll be too busy.
Help?

Taking a course over the summer wouldn’t look bad to me.

Honors chemistry isn’t bad at all. I think most of what you learn is naming compounds, solubility, gas laws, basic concepts like single or double displacement and combustion, and how to balance equations.

Chemistry is definitely something that will be very easy if you have an aptitude for it and very hard if you do not, provided that the course is taught conceptually. Are you going to try to memorize everything from the textbook for the test? It will be hard and won’t make much sense unless your teacher’s questions are also about rote facts or irrelevant stuff. Are you going to do the practice problems? Will you learn and understand the concepts? It will be easier than AP Bio, then.

Make sure your school isn’t stupid and actually weights external honors classes… I speak from experience.

Thanks huehuehue32  I totally understand what you mean. I’ve also done a little chemistry in the beginning of bio and did pretty well, so hopefully I have an aptitude for it :stuck_out_tongue:
DigitalKing, I definitely will :stuck_out_tongue: haha

sillyface, do you think u could self study honors chemistry? In 3 months if you could pass the honors chem exam, I’m pretty sure there is a policy that if u demonstrate competence then you can take ap chem.

I’ve actually thought of doing that! It would definitely give me some more freedom, but I always thought one could only self-study AP’s? I’ll be checking back with my counselor sometime next week though, hopefully it’s an option.

you don’t need to self study ap, just honors.

Self-studying an AP class means taking the AP test without taking the class.
Honors classes don’t come with a standardized test, but self-studying an honors class would probably mean taking your school’s final exam without taking the class (i.e. testing out).

I think you can do it! I’ve taken 3 classes at a time during my summer breaks ever since I was in the 10th grade (I am now a senior). I’d just like to advice you that; taking a class over the summer will be very demanding. You’ll basically be completing a class in 1 month that usually 3-4 months to complete. So be prepared to have tons of homework, test & quizzes, and be expected to comprehend coursework in a short period of time. Go for it! Take the challenge!

It’s worth it and it looks great on a college application because it shows you can handle a fast paced course in a short amount of time
