Summer School

How many courses do most students take during summer school?
I'm planning to take A100 during the summer. I want to knock out the pre-I-core.
Should I take another class during the summer along with A100?
Also, when do I start applying for summer school?
How much does it cost for summer school? (class and dorm)

Here is the cost of last summer’s housing and meal plan. 2012 summer costs are not out yet.

Six credits is a full load during a six-weeks summer session. There are two summer sessions of six weeks each.

I would not take more than 4 credits in a single six weeks session, if one of those classes is A100. Otherwise, take six credits.

Also, A100 is offered at IUPUI in the summer. Meets only once a week for for six weeks, 2.5 hours a day, and is much easier than A100 at IUB.

can you please elaborate on the summer 1 session and summer 2 session?

Also, is there a cost for the class itself?

The first summer session begins the week after Spring Semester finals week and runs for 6 weeks. The second summer session begins in mid-June and runs through early August for 8 weeks (not six). Typically there are a few “intensive” sessions of shorter duration. There are a very limited number of classes available as intensive sessions so I wouldn’t even think about it.

One could complete an entire semester during the summer by taking 2 courses during the 6 week session and 3 during the 8 week session. I would not recommend this having done it many, many years ago. I also took a summer graduate level class recently. This class actually was different as it lasted the entire summer. There was no way it could be done in 6 or 8 weeks given some of the projects that required “waiting” time. Even with the entire summer, it was a challenging class. Be prepared to work hard for a short amount of time.

Yes, one must pay for the courses and fees as usual. I believe in the summer IU charges by the credit hour rather than the flat fee for a certain number of hours. Again, I’m not certain about this as my D only took one class last summer. The costs from 2011 are available by searching the IUB website.

Would you recommend me taking A100 over the summer? I’m worried I’m not able to keep up with course material with that short time.

rrah, IU has a lot of different lengths for summer sessions, but nearly all the Kelley classes are SS1 and SSII, which are six weeks each. A big exception is A329, which can be done in less than three weeks in the first intensive summer session each summer. Here is a chart showing all the different summer sessions. I did not realize they had two eight week summer sessions, and that they overlap.

vietxpham, you have to take A100 sometime. Maybe you could study for it over Christmas break, then take it in summer session one. I don’t know how it could be easier to take than in summer, especially if you only took it and no other class. In fall and spring, A100 meets eight weeks; in summer, it meets six weeks, but with taking no other classes, you should have more than enough time to do well in A100.
