@Runkeeper Im going to NM too!
Either my teacher recs weren’t good enough or my essays/ECs made it sound like I’m more into writing than science. cries
Hopefully one of my other summer programs will pull through…
Congratulations to everyone who got in! You guys really deserve it.
Im in for NM!
@tonystarkofwinterfell try not to worry! you sound like a fabulous person! can i ask what kind of writing you do? I also love writing (poetry)
I got rejected from Iowa SSTP, WTP, and Simons so stay optimistic about your remaining programs!
@rustydreams wait, you got rejected from WTP? As of when? And I’m a poet too! I talked about that in the “something you do in your free time” essay, and I may have sounded like I belonged at a writing camp instead… Oops. Also, like half of my extracurriculars involve literary magazines. The rest of my programs are just as selective as (slightly less selective than, technically, but only by 2%) SSP, so that may be a slight problem…
@tonystarkofwinterfell Writing about poetry’s probably fine. I wrote mine on playing tuba lol. You do seem like nice person, I don’t doubt you’ll get in somewhere else, good luck!
@CaptainMalick hey mine was about orchestra! Although I suspect >=75% of applicants wrote about a music program lol
Anyone else in for Boulder?
Congratulations to all admitted! Hope you guys have a great summer!
@rustydreams @tonystarkofwinterfell also curious about WTP decisions-- I haven’t heard back yet?
Same @angie414… The website says they’ll come out in late April.
@tonystarkofwinterfell wow pro poetry/science person! what do you do to “demonstrate interest” in poetry?
@angie414 And i got rejected early from WTP because I asked for an early decision because their decision was after the day i had to commit to another program (UF SSTP)
And i totally relate to your writing/science dilemma! my free time was all about reading history and writing because i was sure i was not getting in so i thought why not just be honest!
sorry for the lazy grammar XD
@rustydreams I have a blog and I’m part of several writing clubs on my school’s campus. I also run a writing program at the local middle school (:
It’s sad that you were rejected from WTP; they probably thought you had too much experience or something, though. And you got into SSP instead!
@tonystarkofwinterfell omg my WTP rejection was the most soulful thing ever
the lady who sent me the rejection letter became my friend and we had this long email conversation. I suspected i got rejected for not being as passionate about engineering (they said i couldnt do compsci since i had “experience”) as I was about MIT. SO i asked her whether i got rejected because of academics or lack of passion and her response was “I can’t say but i can say your non academics were very good!”
Best non-answer answer ever! So anyway then she said she wouldnt be surprised to see me at MIT (lol ya right) and that I should visit her if i end up there. She was such a wonderful person! So today I told her about SSP and she was delighted.
Conclusion: the people of MIT are splendiferous
ok this is not reddit. XD
@tauisgood same lol
@rustydreams I was in the same situation as you were… Got admitted to UF SSTP, but wanted to wait to hear back from SSP, HSHSP, and WTP… Today I just got rejected by SSP… sad…If I get into none of them I will regret my decision of not accepting UF SSTP’s invitation…
For those of you who were admitted to SSP, could you share your standardized test scores, GPA, and other stats if you feel comfortable sharing? Just to get an idea of how good one needs to be to get to this program… @Runkeeper @coffeeaddicted @CaptainMalick @rustydreams
I kind of regret not confirming with the summer program I was a part of last summer, since they would have allowed me to intern in the same lab. However, for that, I had to confirm by March 1, which was way too early. I also regret not reapplying to COSMOS–I got in last summer (but didn’t go) and decided to not even bother applying this summer because I thought it would be too boring…

^^I did a chance thread a few days ago so you can look at that if need be. Basically, I got a 36 on the ACT, have some astrophysics research experience, & have good but not stellar extracurriculars (mainly because I didn’t do much 9/10 grade). Also, my SSP essays were really good because I had already written essays for RSI/Simons (rip), which I just condensed to the very best info.
@yawninglion i chose to be ripped off and pay 500$ for a spot at UF SSTP
Also my scores are so boring but here it goes…
SAT: 800M 770CR 750W (one test bc SAT is so repulsive i refused to study for it or retake)
SAT II: Math2 800
4.00 GPA, #1 class rank, blah blah
PSAT (don’t judge, it’s the PSAT) 1460/1520, 760M 700R
my stats are pretty boring so idk how much scores matter. i am really involved in astronomy which might have meant more. I have also done research and tons of meaningless math/sci competitions & awards. oh and i have just as many humanities ECs so not sure if that helps or hurts.
Also, my decision might just be a mistake and I will wake up tomorrow and return from wonderland.
Hope this helped.
@yawninglion
SAT: 800M 710CR 760W
PSAT: 750M 710R
GPA: 3.95 (school doesn’t rank)
Do music stuff (school band, brass quintet, won regional competition)
FIRST Robotics (lead of CAD, went to worlds last year, was on drive team last year)
In math club physics club and astronomy club, not really a competitions person though
haven’t done any research lol, think I had pretty good essays and recs though
…maybe I should’ve been part of more physics/astronomy extracurriculars. All of mine are geology, engineering, or humanities (oops).
