Summer Science Program 2017

I don’t think that there is a submission button

When you’re typing your heart out into your essays, do any of y’all feel like the admissions people are just going to skim it for like 20 seconds, read something they don’t really like, and reject you just like that? Sorry, I know that’s kind of irrelevant, but it just makes me so sad to think that. Existential crisis right here lol…

I think SSP gets around 720 applicants (because of the 72 spots and the 10% acceptance rate). It’s like a month of deciding, for both international and domestic, so I think they’d really take their time looking at the applications. At least for a couple of minutes.

I’ve spent so many hours on my essays that it does seem sad that the officers will only read it for 15 minutes. However, that’s just how it works.

@stopthistrain It’s strange to think that all of our hard work is futile.

there’ll probably be way more than just 720 applicants since it only gets competitive each year. also, the acceptance rates will differ for astrophysics and biochem and also for domestic and international students

@HappySquirrel just check the “done” boxes for everything, and they’ll know your application is complete

I can’t even remember how many times I went through all my essays. I’m still not satisfied.

I hate reading my essays. They all seem so fake, even though I mean for them to be genuine. I truly do care a lot about what I’m writing about but it’s hard to articulate it in a way that’s concise, truthful, and positive.

what should I put in the “note to admissions officer”? can I put some random facts about me? haha

@stopthistrain That’s exactly how I feel about my essays. On the application, they state that “reviewers appreciate concise answers”, but I feel like I can’t truly express myself and what I care about if the response is relatively terse. About how long were your essays?

@jjoojjoo I noticed that section as well, and I’m not quite sure exactly what it’s for. Maybe you could…

Do you think it would be wise to put an AP score of 3 on the application? I got a 3 on AP chem but I’m not sure if it’ll detract from the rest of my app.

I wouldn’t.

Also, I’m so worried because I forgot it was receipt not postmarked for transcripts! I sent a pdf of my high school transcript and will be mailing it tomorrow too. Hopefully this won’t affect my app too much.

I think I should be done with my app. I hope I didn’t miss anything small. I don’t want all my work to be in vain!

I don’t think that we have to mail it and email it. It’s either/or right?

Also, I had AP chemistry on my transcript last year. Wouldn’t it be suspicious have an AP class and not have the AP test score? They might think that I didn’t pass

Yeah, but I mailed it too late, so I’m just emailing them to be safe. They prefer it to be mailed.

Hm, yeah, I see. I guess it’s your choice. They said you don’t HAVE to attach it but I can see why it’s a bit more sketchy

I got a 4 on AP Chem and Bio and I’m putting it on there anyway. I got 800 on SAT II Bio and 1600 on SAT so I hope it’ll make up for it.

Btw, the deadline is tomorrow 11:59 PM right? I better add the finishing touches to my short answers…

Just submitted…
Secondary worry is that my transcripts won’t get there on time, since I’m from Cali and requested it from the registrar on Monday.
Main worry is everything else.

@Sinphiroh2 I mailed my transcript on Monday from Maine (takes 5 days to be sent from ME to NC) and they said that it’d be fine as long as it will be received early next week.

@szhang9246 11:59 pm PST.

The application status pages shows that my application is complete. Do I just wait then? I’m a little nervous now.
