Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

I have no idea what any of my teachers or counselor wrote about me.

Weird thing is, I'm not even that curious. As long as they dedn't say I'm a psycopath or something... ;)

yeah, so today i found out from the teacher that i expected a lesser rec from that he just wrote some personal stuff and checked all 5%s. i cant say that im not pleased, since its not gonna be anything that could possibly break me.

but oddly enough im concerned that im being complacent. but i dont see why i shouldnt get in if i have good scores essays, and at least decent recs. but eh.

Mailed in my app yesterday.... :D

DONE! i mailed mine today!
good luck everyone! : )

when do they start looking at apps? two weeks from tomorrow? if u mailed urs so soon, would they look at urs first?

So has anybody else gotten the "oh crap, it's almost the 20th!" feeling? I'm waiting on my SAT scores on the 12th, and my teachers have had my recommendation forms for two weeks already, but I need to do a couple of the questions and the financial aid form.

First deadline is Feb 20th (It's a Friday - the day I get my wisdom teeth out :(). From reading the sight, I guess that they practice rolling-style admissions - evaluate the apps as they come in, but I doubt there is any extra benefit to sending in the app Feb 10th vs the 19th, becuase the process is said to start on the 20th.

Just my guess ;) and hope that made sense.

^Thanks! that cleared things up definitely. gah I can't believe I have to mail to NC. that means it'll take like 4-5 days. So I'll have to send the monday of that week I guess. yea, I have yet to start on my essays :[ luckily, I have pretty much all my test scores, teacher recs, transcripts ready. (waiting on a transcript to come in mail, 1 rec to go) so..lets compile a list of which state everyone is from? just for teh lulz

tomjonesistheman: CA
bookworm: Wisconsin

good luck guys ;)

Yeah, good luck everyone! This is very exciting.

And for those of you who are feeling a little rushed, don't worry! It still is OK to miss the early deadline (but do turn it in well before March 20). The most important thing is to put together the strongest application you can.

hmm, so, for number two about extracurriculars, should we put math and sci ecs there or just focus on like clubs and stuff? or should we just wait till we get to 4d where it asks about science and math activities specifically?

Third page? Seriously, guys? ;)

My teachers have had my recs for three weeks and they haven't started yet. Facedesk. They should have them by the end of the week, though. I'm planning on sending mine in on Friday, Monday at the latest.

Also, I have 3 more questions to answer. Guh. I'm kind of worried about the first one, but whatever. How's everyone else doing?

^Focus on whatever you want to. 4D doesn't really offer enough space to go into detail on your math/science ECs, so it might be wise to mention them on question 2. Just don't repeat yourself - only mention each activity once. Readers could get bored...

Wow people. I had to go to the third page of threads to find this. I feel like a necromancer ;)

^ Yay that someone else saved the thread :) high fives

My essays took forever to write. I revised them continously, rewrote them many times, even changed topics. It drove me crazy, but they're out of my hands now...

That blows about the teachers, though. Mine actually gave me the letters about two weeks before I needed them... it was my counselor that waited until last week...

^ Yes! XD I was waiting for someone else to do it but nobody did so I took initiative. At the same time as you, apparently. Great minds think alike.

I don't know. I have this thing where I get strangely attached to anything I write and don't want to change anything. Oops.

Yeah. I've been poking them every day, so hopefully they'll be done soon. I didn't think they'd be amazing recs in the first place, though, so I don't mind all that much.

Should I even turn in a application? >_< from what I've been reading in this topic, compared to me, you guys are godly. I'm not sure I really qualify......

The problem is that I have two Cs on record =/. And I'm only active in four clubs
Math Club, NHS, CSF, Idea Magazine(school's only literary magazine, currently vice president). My PSAT scores are 10th grade:192, 11th grade:205. My SAT II scores: math II:730, and world history: 720. I'm getting back my SAT I in a couple of days, so maybe I can break 2100 on it...Basically, I have a typical above average student's resume =/, so nothing special either- though I can write pretty good essays. I'll probably be wiped out of the applicants without the people blinking huh?

^ Just looking at your math/science grades... on average they're lower than your english/humanities grades. Not a good sign. Your test scores, however, won't keep you out- they're likely high enough.

If you're really passionate about math/science and can write about/demonstrate that passion, apply - don't worry about your academic "flaws."

I'm also waiting for Jan SAT scores (31 hours left!) but they won't affect my app...

Yea, your grades aren't that great, though this isn't RSI where you would get rejected immediately. and NHS/CSF= BS clubs. or at least, in my school

From what I heard last year while I was at SSP, admissions is done in a committee. Several people will review your application, and then meet to discuss. They'll definitely have a good look at it. No worries there.

SSP admissions is tough, that's true. Test scores, however, are not everything. It's really the essays that count the most. Really. The essays.

Oh, you could send in an update of your SAT scores whenever you receive them. You'll have to ask Mr. Bowdon - I'm not sure if its okay to fax, mail, or w.e.
I think they'll still take it since its not the final March deadline yet.

hmm, is it necessary to submit a third letter of rec?
