Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

Is there also a difference between wait listed and deferred?

I guess in first round, waitlisted are those who top deferred :p

P.S. Don't take me seriously. I'm just assuming.

naw, waitlisted means that theres no more spots, but that youre qualified to attend, and your only hopes of getting in are contingent on other people not going.

deferred means that because the adcom of ssp havent seen all applicants yet, they cant really determine if youll be in the top 72 or so people in the end, so they wait until they know more about the other applicants before they render a decision on your application.

thus, deferred>waitlisted.

Hey guys, I just dropped off my application for the second round. For those of you that got your decisions already, when did you guys complete your applications? When should I expect an admissions decision?

It looks like at this rate, I won't be able to get my application to them until the 19th. Will turning it so late affect my chances at all?

basically, possibly. if when they get to ur app theyve already admitted 72 people, then you can only get waitlisted. submitting that late basically lowers your chances of being accepted up front.

Hey gary7 I got rejected too. People who got rejected probably just didn't want to post. Damn I really wanted to go too. Just want to congratulate us both for at least trying ;)

I'm 2nd in my class and have a good amount of extracurriculars and interests although they aren't academic. Stats may have more importance than many think because people here seem to all have very high SAT scores while mine weren't all that amazing, esp in critical reading and math.

Anyways, congrats to everyone who got in.

Thanks for posting, ReArranger. I wish you would have gotten in.

SSP conflicts with Girls State, so now I can't go to Girls State - my sister is mad at me.

Is there anyone from Washington State going?

well, no one has answered this question yet: so who thinks its a good idea to reply back after getting deferred?
it basically says "decision postponed..unable to make a final decision..you are not alone..send you a progess report in about a week..in your best interest."
any advice?

id suggest against it. since it is only a week, and since you didnt get waitlisted, its not like youre necessarily looking in at the spots. see what they decide and if you get waitlisted id recommend sending in another email.

err is it strange that i haven't gotten ANYTHING back from them? o_O but then again they just got my app last saturday..

To those who got in:

What do you think was the strongest part of your application?

dolcevalse: no, only Early applicants got emails.
I think they are sending out more decisions next week.
Am I right on this?

Also one quick question,

for the 500 word limit on question 4, if I write 600, would they notice/care/ get angry?

in other words, do they enforce the word count strictly?

thank you tomjones! although i'm seriously doubting i got in ..

I DID exceed my word limits within the 10% rule....Bad idea I guess :p

600 is kinda a lot for 500..i think like 530 should be max.

^ But they do not actually count the words right? There are a lot of small words/articles in my sentences, and if I were to remove them, the grammar would be weird.
