Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

I thought results came out 2 weeks after. Also, deferred students in round 1 are compared with round 2?
I would think they would look at all of the rounds before getting back to deferred applicants..

April is not that far away, if it's April first that is.

If there are only three rounds and the application period is 4 weeks, we can assume the second cutoff was midway through, or two weeks after the 20th, suggesting you'll get your decisions back two weeks after first, at the earliest. Also, they may not have even touched the second round until they were done with the first, so it could be three weeks from when first round got notified. Bleh, I hate waiting.

It's all just speculation on my part. It seems really annoying, though, if we went through the trouble of getting the app in early to still have to wait until mid to late April for the third round to finish up. I have no idea if they're comparing us to second, third, or both, though I'd hope that the "we'll get back to you in about a week" note means we'll get something more substantial than "we're still working, be patient." Maybe they stuck those of us whose apps didn't get there until the 19th or 20th on the top of the second round.

I was under the impression that all results would be out, at latest, by 2 weeks after the march 20 deadline - so thats beginning of april.

nah, dude. mine got in 18th/19th definitely, i mailed priority. I just got deferred, I guess, because I wasn't special in any way..
but i want to stop waiting, and get in!!! grrrr..

:(
when did they promise deferred decisions by?

Yeah, mine was there on the 20th, I did priority mail as well. I think I may just be struggling to deal with the waiting. Hopefully we'll know this week, yes?

Will they consider second round applicants first before the deferred?

And so will the second round applicants find out the results first?

Us third rounders..I feel so lonely XD

wow 40 pages!! haha..
yea I don't think any of us know the answers to our own questions..
hopefully results come out by this Friday!

oh gosh, im just getting more scared by the day, especially after seeing how qualified some of the deferees were (tomjones' stats scared me for sure).

Have sophomores historically made it? I can pass for a top junior, for sure, but do they look at sophomores any less?

For what I mean by "passable as junior":
2360 sat
238 psat
ap: physics, calc bc, chem, comp sci 5
other: chem olympiad nationals, aime qualifier 4 years in a row, physics olympiad quarterfinalist, sci oly states qualify, medals, other stuff.

Does anyone know any sophs who've been there but haven't wanted to graduate early? SSp makes it sound like they are not interested in sophomores at all ("sophomores should wait a year...")

Huh. Your stats destroy mine. From talking to a friend of mine who's an alumni, SSP focuses a lot on building a community, not just taking the 72 smartest applicants. That may be why they're so reluctant to take sophomores.

ah. hopefully teacher recs that have good words to say about maturity and teamwork and stuff will help. But i guess i still have next year..

OH NO!!!
Something terrible just happened. Ok, please you've got to read this.

I wanted three recommendations after asking the compulsory ones form my physics and calc teacher (math and science). I wanted another one from a professor i worked with in UCSC. I emailed him, and he said he'd write one for me. But he didn't respond in due time, so I asked my counselor instead. She wrote one for me, and I submitted the app and I've even recieved conformation.

Now, the professor emailed me and apologized because he fell ill. He told me he submitted the recommendation to the SSP ppl yesterday already!! Now I've got 4 recommendations submitted!! I emailed Richard Bowdon about this, but here was his reply:

Arbiter,

I passed along to the reviewers everything we had for you.

Cheers,
Richard Bowdon

What's this supposed to mean?!? What does "passed" mean? He didn't say anything about the 4th recommendation even being considered...what's going on???

Calm down. It probably just means that they might have had it and given it to the reviewers, or didn't have it and just gave whatever they got to the reviewers. If the professor sent it yesterday, chances are it hasn't gotten there yet and wasn't given to the reviewers.

QuantumArbiter, it should be okay - it probably didn't even get there yet.
