Summer Science Program (SSP) 2009

This thread is hilarious.
Who bets on friday, and who bets on saturday? =)

ill bet saturday

I’ll bet Saturday too (although Friday would be preferable). Good luck to you guys still waiting on decisions! Hopefully I’ll get off the waitlist and see some of you guys there :P

I’ve got 1,000 slices of bacon on Friday. Any takers?

I’ll bet that she sells sea shells at the sea shore.

Guess what? I saw a big black bug bite a big black bear, and made the big black bear bleed blood.

Look forward to rooming with some of you.

One smart fellow, he felt smart.
Two smart fellows, they felt smart.
Three smart fellows, they all felt smart.
72 smart fellows, went to SSP.

that wasn’t too bad.

…fail

trying to keep up with the tonguetwisting madness that is the SSP cc thread.

hmm, i was looking at the 2008 socorro college list (page 42), and what happened? why did so few of the people get into hyps compared to before? did few people apply?

^^^^
All the smart people went to Ojai. :-P

JK. I actually think the HYPS yield is pretty good all things considered. Most SSP students don’t have HYPS as their top choices though. MIT and Caltech are the favorites for SSP alumni.

hmm is there a link to the college list?

its on page 42.

hmm, shayonsaleh, how did 2008 ojai people do in terms of college? where are they tending to go / get in?

With these credentials, does anyone know what my chances of getting in are…?

Grade: 10
AP Classes: World History and Calculus AB
PSAT: Math 72
GPA: 98%
Extracurriculars: Newspaper Club (Staff writer), Math Team, Business Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, Academic team, FBLA, Science olympiad.

Can only attend Ojai campus because of late school closing

Here’s the Ojai link: [Summer Science Program '08 / College Admissions](Workspace not found)

The major school acceptances for the Ojai group are:
Caltech - 11
MIT - 6
Princeton - 6
UCLA - 6
UC Berkeley - 6
Northwestern - 5
Columbia - 4
Chicago - 4
WUSTL - 4

And to finish HYPSM:
Harvard - 2
Yale - 2
Stanford - 2

I think California schools know more about SSP than East Coast schools. Schools like Caltech played a large role in starting up the program fifty years ago.

Here are just some stats if you combine the acceptances from both campusses:
[ul]
[]20 people (25%+) got into Caltech, which has a class size of about 200. So, about 10% of the incoming class could theoretically be SSP students.
[]18 people (25%) got into MIT, which has a class size of about 1000. So, about 1.8% of the incoming class could be from SSP.
[]28 of the 72 SSP students from last year got into HYPSM. That’s more than 33%.
[]There were Juniors at both campuses so these numbers could technically increase.
[/ul]
Can you tell that I’m an SSP fan? :-P

Wow, nice stats.
Did the people who got into HYPS have other awesome unique factors, besides SSP? I’m one of those people really strong in math/science, but weak in other fields.

so i would think that the presumption is that a lot of sspers dont generally apply to hyps as much as they would mit and caltech, since a lot seemed to just choose caltech after getting in ea.

counting the number of people who got into one american college (so you dont count like juniors and int’ls in the total figure), 28 of the 51 people who got into a college last year got into at least one of hypsm, which is really good, and it seems like many of the other 23 didnt even apply. so to me thats just mind boggling haha.

to tomjones, i doubt ssp would help you a lot. but at least knowing this means that i know that ill meet tons of uber smart people at ssp lol.

I MADE SSP GUYS, OJAI!! SO unexpected, i guess noone gets that 1000 slices of bacon!!

w00t I made it too. Guess I’ll see all of you Ojai people this summer!

now wheres that ojai group…
