Summer Science Program (SSP) 2010

wow lol

Doesnt SSP practice Affirmative Action too?

@funnyname: I think that at my campus, out of the 36 students there, at least half were born outside of the US. Not quite sure, though. Only 12 of the 36 were state residents; the rest were from other parts of the US or international applicants. Countries represented included Turkey, Romania, India, the Republic of Georgia, Canada, Great Britain, and Mexico.

Race/ethnicity info is gathered from the preliminary online application. SSP follows up on the URMs and encourages them to complete their paper applications since, I imagine, URM applicants are less likely to be familiar with the program than the other applicants are. I doubt that affirmative action plays a large role in admissions… actually, I’m not sure if there were any URMs there. (2/3 were East or South Asian.) I think SSP just wants to reach out to students who perhaps haven’t been groomed for college admissions their whole life… They want a more eclectic mix of people from a greater variety of backgrounds, not mindless clones spewed from the admissions machine.

…Am I going to get crucified for this?

@poachedivory: how many girls vs. guys were in your program?

wait there was a preliminary online application? lol

actually

i sorta remember it now

I filled it out so long ago

Was there a option for “do not wish to specify”?

“Only 12 of the 36 were state residents”!!!

Holy, that is shocking.

wth lol

so its like mostly international?

“the rest were from other parts of the US”

what does that mean?

@leelac: 20 guys and 16 girls for my campus… not too bad. It always felt like a good balance of male vs. female.

@mabsjenbu123: There probably was an option for decline to specify; otherwise SSP would get slapped with a lawsuit for racial discrimination or something. I counted and for my campus (Ojai), ~1/3 were international, 1/3 were from California, and ~1/3 were from other parts of the United States. Then again, though, a lot of the students moved back and forth between the U.S. and other countries, so I don’t know if they were considered international or domestic applicants.

*edit:
I’m not sure if I made it clear in my above posts, but “state residents” = California residents

poachedivory, who are you?

Tom Jones, you are the man. Your project at Ojai last year really was beastly.
As well as your basketball skills!

@tomjones: lol uhm. Ask bks85? I just PM’d him.

I will probably get some feedback on Monday from SSP

Is there anyone who KNOWS that they submitted a complete application but has yet to receive a confirmation email? Now I’m getting pretty worried…

@iceui2 yup, me. i sent them an email to the email address listed on the site about a week ago, but no one’s responded. i figure they’re so busy that emails get lost in their inbox. i’m not sure if i should send another though…

Still no confirmation here.

Were all your materials in one package? If so, you should have heard by now. You should send them an email.

4 boys from DS’s school mailed their packages, all with a postmark of the 15th. None has heard.

i sent my application on the 15th and i received a confirmation email on the 22nd… i would contact them if you havent heard back.

@zest21 who did you email?

I emailed to ‘admissions@summerscience.org’. They replyed on the same day.
Good luck!

That’s really weird.
I sent mine on the 15th and got a confirmation on the 22nd.
I’ve also been in correspondence regarding updates and they’ve emailed back promptly each time.
