Summer Science Program (SSP) 2013

@PhysicsGal,
Well I had alumini connections listed, first gen and said I had no opportunities to attend a paid program. I wrote about physics, math and etc. there are many factors into play. First, I said that I’ve taken blah blah, I check the curriculum of SSP. I already know Python, the math and most of the physics I think they offer. The only thing I wouldn’t know is there astrophysics.

Im sorry to everyone that didn’t get in. 740 people, that’s tough…

For all that got rejected, list other programs ! I would love to know what were your backups

Rejected… I’m a Sophomore in high school, so better luck next year, I guess.

Does anyone know if SSP will send us a paper copy of the decision or not?

Somehow I got in (NM Tech). Can someone PM me the link to the Facebook group? I couldn’t find it.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions? I’m trying to decide between SSP, SIMR, and Simons. I like biology as much as physics and have no preference with respect to research/non-research. All programs seem great; how much weight would you give each one with respect to college admissions (HYPSMC)?

Accepted to NM! I’m so surprised I can’t even explain it. For all of you who didn’t get in I hope you find something fun for this summer
@studiousmaximus I wrote about chemistry for the first essay and only mentioned physics for the question specifically about it and never mentioned astronomy

Don’t give up, everyone! Things will work out for the best. :)

740 applicants… Wow. I’m pretty sure that at this point, some decisions are going to be more or less random.

(@alpha: I attended ssp, and I was wait listed for MIT. It’s not a sure ticket! )

@ mineeto: those are all great choices. I vouch for ssp because its not simply a learning experience; it’s a social one. With simr, sure, you can get some research that you can submit to intel, but you won’t have that close knit community that makes ssp special since not everyone lives together. Pm if you have specific questions!

Whoops, I mean chemistry.^

I wrote about chemistry and chemE, and about my college radio experience (activity), research, and some other stuff.
nothing particularly about physics or astronomy. I’m taking AP Physics C: Mech only. The only physics i had was FTIR and NMR. So, I’ll def weigh out my opportunities after I get decisions from the other summer programs.

I’m New Mexico batch, btw

@Mineeto
That’s impressive! I would’ve done anything to go to SIMR but was rejected. I bet SIMR and SSP would be about the same for college admissions but look at your overall profile and does physics or med fit more with what you’ve done so far? More importantly what would you more enjoy spending your whole summer doing? ANd SIMR would probs help you get into Stanford more and SSP more for like MIT-type schools

Alternate! I am actually not as disappointed as I thought I would be. I’m already in at UF’s SSTP program and waiting to hear back from SUMaC. Hopefully, one of you chooses not to go xD

Alternates- don’t give up! About 5 of us last year got in off the alternate list I think

Oh good, so it’s not unrealistic to hope for a chance! How many were on the list last year, if you know?

But yeah it helps for college, especially caltech I think. (very similar experience at SSP and caltech socially)

But most of the time the people who go to SSP would have gotten into their colleges without it too. They’re just that qualified? It certainly helps one stand out amongst the crowd but certainly isn’t a ticket into hpysmc…

Idk how many were on the waitlist… Sorry

haha i see you’re on here too :slight_smile:
I also got in off the waitlist, and i also have no idea how many they waitlist. from NM campus there were three kids who came off the waitlist and 2 from westmont, iirc

It looks like most people got in at NM. I should’ve wrote that I can attend both…

Oh btw go to SIMR it’s 8 weeks and acceptance rate is 4% (;

rejected…
still congratulations to all the ppl who got in, i’m sure all of you would have a great experience:)
btw, doesn’t ssp have an age limit as well as just grade limit? where is the age limit mentioned on the website? I remember seeing it, but couldn’t find it right now…

There were definitely more than 2 at westmont. Including myself, I personally know of at LEAST 4 people in my campus who got in off the waitlist

Alternate!
I’m not too surprised at the result. Hopefully, I can get into the programs! :D

Thank you very much for your application to the Summer Science Program. We regret that we will not be able to offer you a place in SSP 2013. Applications to SSP have grown significantly, to a record 740 this year, while enrollment has remained capped at 72 since 2004.

Since you are an excellent student, you probably wonder why you were not admitted, or what you could have done differently. Unfortunately it is not possible for us to offer feedback to individual applicants, for several reasons. But be aware that admissions decisions for SSP, as for a selective college, are inherently subjective. That is inevitable where there are many highly qualified applicants for each opening.

We appreciate that you made a significant effort to prepare your application. That was good practice for your college applications in the future. Although this outcome may be disappointing for you, we strongly encourage you to pursue your interest in science.

Best regards,
Richard D. Bowdon SSP '74
Executive Director

Eh.

LacrosseGirl: WHAT? lol that’s too hilarious and interesting XD What’d you write about the menstrual cycle? I bet the reader was very intrigued haha

Which campus, btw? Have you found the FB group? I found the 2012 one… but no luck for the 2013.
