But let’s try to keep this thread SSP focused :)

Does attending the SSP actually make any impact in the college applications? For instance, could it brighten my chances for MIT or Caltech?

My first short answer is going up to 300 words… The one about the favorite topic in science/math. I really have so much to say and don’t feel like any sentences are really deletable. Any alumni went in to the same situation as mine? Do you guys think it’s ok to pass the limit so much?

Is it OK to submit an extra rec?

Yes it is, it says here in the Application Instructions.
“If there is a third adult who knows you well (teacher, counselor, employer, coach, etc.), feel free to include a form and/or letter of recommendation from that person too.”

All right, thank you!

@MITQuantum
I attended SSP last year.
It does help with college, but that is not a good reason to attend. SSP is a once in a life time experience, and is valuable in and of itself. The kind of people you meet there will inspire you to the best you can be. There are far more meaningful benefits to attending SSP than that it might help you with college.

@saralagarwal
I totally agree with you from what I have read in other SSP alumni posts.
But any thoughts on my word limit question (#46)?

@ProximaCentauri, although I don’t know much about SSP because I’m applying to it for the first time this year, I believe 300 words might be too long because it is twice the actual word-limit.

I had a question about the essay on what you do for enjoyment/relaxation. Would talking about more than one hobby be okay?

I attended SSP last year, and I talked about two different hobbies. I talked about oboe playing and a volunteer church activity, so I’m sure that it’s fine to talk about more than one hobby.

@BeyondTheSky
Yeah, I agree, trying to shrink it and move some parts to other essays(since my short answers are quite interrelated)
Good luck applying!

@BeyondTheSky
I’m thinking about writing two hobbies as well just worried that I’ll get into the word limit trap again…

@ Alumni of SSP

It’s clear that SSP students go on to great colleges, but the cost of SSP is kind of making me not want to apply.

What would you say to the people who claim that SSP is not prestigious because it costs 4k?

Ofcourse I do not want to attend SSP for just the sake of it.
Its just that I’ll apply for finaid and if I am unable to get it, I won’t be able to attend :(

Same here…I can’t attend if I don’t get enough aid.

Most people get financial aid ask for the full amount!
