Summer Science Program (SSP) 2014

Yeah, still don’t understand why there are two deadlines.

@proximacentauri
They say that they want to give time to international applicants to get their visas. Also, they may want to avoid getting all the application at once. But yeah, I wish I had bit more time…

How do you sophomores out there explain why you are applying this year?

Well I’ll encourage you to apply next year is you are one cause its really an once-in-a-lifetime chance

Do you guys know when we will hear back from SSP?

@sciencenerd63
Isn’t it 5-6weeks after the deadline?
They’ll send emails after they’re finished but I wonder whether we’ll only get an email notification for admission or for both the good news and the bad news.

@sciencenerd63
In mid-March for international applicants, and mid-April for domestics. It was March 15 and April 10 last year, respectively.

Thanks

This thread seems surprisingly quiet. Is everyone shy or are we all just lurking on the threads from previous years?

Also, sorry for the double post, but @ProximaCentauri, nice username!

@argentum47 Much flattered! I was just thinking about a name that could capture the fact that I was an Astro person and it came up to me
Yeah, this thread is super quiet, I literally check for new posts twice a day—usually to my disappointment. Maybe its because internationals like me have done the application already, but the majority of domestic students still got a few days till the deadline.
Is it true to assume that most applicants are from the US though? Cause I heard in 2012 only about 130 international students applied as opposed to 500 domestic students?

@ProximaCentauri Yeah, I’m also international (UK). I promised myself I would stay away from this thread because there’s nothing I can do to change my application, but I just can’t resist!
Yeah, most are US. But it’s still annoying how low statistically the chances are for international applicants, especially if, like me, you can only apply for the Westmont campus. Oh well, as long as there’s still a chance…

I applied as a Sophomore last year, and all of us get an email back whether we are selected for this program or not… (Last year was a bit less than 10% acceptance!) I’ve been going crazy lately trying to prep for the SATs, but I need to finish these essays within two days before it’s too late. I’ve heard rumors of there being a quota for international students, actually, but I can’t confirm it, so maybe it’s not true.
I want to go to SSP more than anything since last year, so hopefully things will work out!

@Nobody426 Hang in there! And yes, I’d assumed that it was 5 international students per campus, but maybe not.
I also found out about this last year, but I’d just missed the deadline to apply

Eurgh, I’m already really nervous, so goodness knows what kind of emotional wreck I’m gonna be when we get the email. Anyway, good luck to everyone applying, including the people stalking this thread without a CC account (you know who you are)

@argentum47 so I suppose you’re going to take the A-Level in May&June as well? I’m in China but our school is an international one that teaches the CIE curriculum. It’s frustrating that in China high school only lasts for 3 years (we finished IGCSE in just one year which I heard is uncommon), cause I feel that an extra year will make my prospects for SSP or college more promising. Like I would be able to finish the SATs and APs earlier and commit myself to more ECs. That said, I’m happy with things now but if I this works out I’ll be 100 times happier.
@Nobody426, do you mean the SAT in Jan or March? A quota might not be possible but they do have to seek a balance, my guess is that there’ll be 10-15 internationals in each camp (probably we should ask the people who went).

@argentum47 Actually we’re all one of those stalkers lol. 5 per camp? Last year didn’t they say there was 3 from China and 3 from Romania in one camp? And there must be more that those 6 I think or am I over-optimistic?

Wow, so I’m not the only one who keep checking this thread! Lol

@ProximaCentauri Yeah 3 years is too short for us to get prepared and show ourselves. For me the situation is much more challenging cause I didn’t think about study abroad till exactly a year ago. And to be honest, I still have lots of problems in speaking English… Really admkire u since it seems like the language didn’t bother u so much. :slight_smile:

Back to the topic. 15 internationals each camp might be sorta unreal, while there should be more than 6. I assume that they would decide a rough number of internationals based on the number of applications they received and the quality or them (which, obviously, varies in different years). Otherwise, how can they sent the admit email to internationals before starting to view the domestics’?

Wait, what is the domestic to international ratio on this thread? It seems like most of us are internationals… Lol

Wow, I had been inactive for quite a long time, I don’t know why. I am an international too, and thankfully, my application got there right on the deadline. :slight_smile: I’m really scared about getting in and am already planning to apply to other backup programs in my country.

When they ask for 500 words, do you actually have it under 500? I can not shrink it less the 650.
