Summer Science Program SSP Introduction Thread

kisstheskyxx...

Actually I got rejected from TASP after the interview round.:( I have some other sweet backups though like debate camp and this other international relations seminar. Hmmm, you're still welcome to live vicariously through my experiences though Ahra.;)

Aww, that's unfortunte :( but its great that you have other programs planned. YOu should come to SSP! It'd be a lottta funn :P and you are just DYING to meet me lol, yes? ^.^

there is a 7-11, i think

feeewf! at last! there is justice in this world! :)

Well thats good to know!

Now does anyone know SSP's policy on students leaving campus? Socorro seems like a a really nice, safe little town...

i'm sure that our teachers, or security, or whoever will be supervising us will not have to worry about us leaving the campus...i mean, c'mon!
it's desert all around, and the nearest town is "only" 19 miles away...

(but that is what THEY think....evil grin)

However, since we started discussing SSP policies....what are your thoughts on the last three points in the "Code of Conduct"?

Yeah really... I know that I don't want to walk 19 miles in the blazing sun and fight back the rattle snakes to get to wherever the nearest town is (other than Socorro that is) grins

on last 3 points of code of conduct...

point i)

I'd like to know exactly what "unreasonably disheveled dirty or extreme" appearance looks like. Does that include cutoff jeans? Whatever. I think that would be a hard accusation to prove against anyone. What constitutes unreasonably dirty? Does that mean a ketchup stain, or does that mean a shirt you rolled in the mud in?

Though later on it says that no tank tops are allowed in the dining room at dinner time... um ok.... I'll bring a sweater.

Point j)

I'm sure there are a ton of other places to socialize with girls/boys without going into their dorm rooms. (and there's always the chance that you walk in and someone is changing and that's always a little awkward.)

point k)

I think this is another rule that will be kind of hard to enforce. Who's to say what one set of parents think is inappropriate vs. another? I mean... I bet some people's parents think holding hands in public is scandelous, and others don't care if their daughter is sitting on some guy's lap or something. I think there are some standards that all parents would agree on, as far as conduct in public is concerned, but we're all relatively decent people... right?

So overall, my opinion is that they felt like they had to say something about how people look and act in public, mostly to put parents at ease. Not to say that I don't think they'll be enforced to some extent (especially the dorm one) but I don't think they're anything to get upset about either.

SSP has to say that stuff so they look good academically and morally

they wish to please those bible belt people

so be it

we city slicker cosmopolitan urbanites know better

Yeah, I particularly don't like the whole "not going into the other sex's room without severe consequences" part of the rules, but I thought the rest of the rules are pretty reasonable. I mean, we're all (erg, mostly) good kids and I don't think we'll do anything scandalous that we would regret. SO the whole "never go to another gender's room" thing is kinda strange and...overprotective? Huh. I hang out with alot of guys and the girls to guy ratio at SSP I think is nearly 2:1, so its weird that I could get suspended for walking in a guy's room lol when they are the majority. Oh well. I could live it, yeah, but still. I wish I could walk into a guys room when i'm bored just to chat or what not. Eh.

no not 2:1 :: girls: guys

its more the opposite

at CTY our RAs had rounds and female RAs would come into our male dorms and make sure ... you know.

lol, what i meant smiles sheepishly

So, its 30 people per campus, right? I wonder if Mr. Bowden got my money/deposit...>_<

just for the purpose of keeping this thread alive:

what are you going/planning to do in the next 33 days before June 18th?

First of all, I've got to get myself a passing grade in english class...

I get out of school on the 9th (or the 6th if I'm exempt from all of my exams) and I'm teaching at little 3 to 5 year olds ballet camps all day from the 5th through the 17th.

At some point, I'll also start packing grins

And... I did some research, and there are two small dance studios within a mile of the NMT campus! If the schedules mesh and we're left with some free time, its close enough to run down and take a few classes!!!

Y'all have no idea how much better that makes me feel... I haven't gone a week without ballet since I was about 6 years old; the prospect of 6 weeks away from a dance studio was really something I was unhappy about.

I'm going to relax as much as I can, going to attend USC orientation on the 13-14th, learn more guitar, resume learning French, haha.

And then my random stuff:

successfully attempt lucid dreaming (but I've been trying this for an entire year, no cigar)

senior prank?

finish a short story

rediscover repressed memories

beat my friend at starcraft. Sigh.

who took physics bowl?

ergm....no, not me

but i persuaded my physics teacher to create a physics team for the next year...yeeeey!! :)
also, she said she'll visit us sometime in July.....she's crazy lol...but she's cool :)

yeah :)

now...should i post another question? (i mean, if i keep doing that, there would be nothing left to talk about when we get there...

hmm......neah, let's do it:)

what about college and major? where do you want to go and what do you want to become?
:)

PS: Shadowdancer, that's cool..seriously :)
Cipher, hurray for Starcraft :)

Wow. that was a record number of smiley faces, Hriundeli! :)
Amazing.

Well, my major will probably be Chemical Engineering and/or Chemistry....
Even though I suck at it and probably got a three on the AP Exam, I still love it.
Dream school: Princeton, U of Chicago.

We're not doing anything in any of my classes because Ap Exams are over, so I'm just chillaxing in all of my classes..haha. How are you guys' classes?

School ends for me onthe 21st....when does school end for y'all?

AND OOH.
Favorite sport/sports team/player?
Color?

^_^

we need to know each other well b4 gettng to SSP...haha.

School ends June 19th for me.

Favorite sport, personally track. To watch? Dunno. Maybe soccer? Sports team: Go Trojan Football Team! I don't watch football. haha

Favorite color? Some soft shade of green.

Favorite music?
Favorite movies?

Screennames?
Facebook/Myspace? :-D

SSP will be so amazing

for some reason, my plane seating got switched around

i didnt know they could just switch you to whatever seat even though you already picked it when purchasing

I <3 physics, but my school doesn't have any academic extracurriculars

I get out on June 6th

Colleges: My top 3 are MIT, Cooper Union, Columbia (If I can get in)
and then Boston University or University of Virginia or William and Mary if I can't

Majoring in engineering of some sort probably... mechanical or aerospace or chemical most likely

sport: that'd have to be... um... Ballet really doesn't count (its as physically demanding and time consuming and stuff... but its def an art) I played soccer for a bunch of years and I really like that. Hockey is fun to watch, and I like watching soccer too. Field hockey makes me laugh. I run sometimes too. I like to watch figure skating and gymnastics and that sort of thing.

Random story: I played one season of basketball, in third grade. We were the pink team, and we were awful. I shot the only basket the entire season. Thats right... 10 games, 2 points total. bows I got the MVP award for that grins

I don't really follow any sports teams or players... but occaisonally when there are home games I get dressed up in orange and blue and go to UVa games (football, soccer, lacrosse sometimes, trackmeets, hockey...)

Color: um I actually really like grey... but second to that, red, then green, then blue, then white (and I don't want to hear about how white isn't a color or its all the colors and whatnot)

I don't really like orange or yellow shrugs

music: world music mostly... some french stuff and some hebrew stuff and some normal modern music too... oh and oldies grins

movies: musicals and action adventure films mostly. I don't really have a favorite, though I watched Italian Job last night and it was great.

That took awhile grins now for my questions

There are a bunch of musicians... so... Favorite Composers?
Favorite ice cream flavor?
and lastly, for the long distance people, from where are you flying into ABQ airport from?

My answers to my questions grins Tchaikovsky, I'm lactose intolerant so I can't eat ice cream, though I really like cherry chocolate chunk until i get sick a few hours later, and I'm flying Washington Dulles to Ft.Worth to ABQ
