Summer Science Program (SSP)

I feel like no one is going to Socorro at all, let alone to play golf...

I see Ruella's point here. Even though the first threads announced Socorro campus (I think doctor and Ruella were probably the first in this thread to put up decisions), the list hasn't grown much since. Meanwhile, Ojai has become overpopulated - but I like it that way. There are 5 Socorros, 9 Ojais, and 3 who got put up on the Alternate List (assuming I haven't missed anyone).

All the best to those who are on Alternate, hoping to see you all in Ojai in the lazy (er...well, maybe not so lazy) days of summer.

This is the list as it stands now.

Socorro Campus:
doctorx017, NY
Ruella76, MD
kennyk616, Taiwan
junglebum
SlowFastHazel

Ojai Campus:
freeflyer, CA
09xoxo, NJ
udbhav, India
z-particle, India
elliott_j, Orange County CA
generalobserver
Imandb
snowbunny
sspParticipant

Alternate List:
Vihang, India
westcoastlove
Flippy

Did you folks check out the site Udbhav posted about a few pages back? The one with the Ojai QODs? In case you didn't, be sure to check it out once at

http://www.angelfire.com/moon/ssp03/misc.html

I sure hope we get to do this kind of stuff this summer!

You can add me to the Socorro list. There still seem to be a disproportionate number of people going to Ojai though. I'm from California by the way.

did they email EVERYONE who applied on the march 23 deadline already?

Whoops...sorry Yon, must have missed your name somehow. Still, how come the Socorro/Ojai ratio is 2:3? You'd think that Socorro would be ahead by at least six or seven, judging from last year.

What exactly happens in the Closing Exercises? I'm just asking because I have to catch a long flight back home, and if I miss the Exercises I'll be able to catch a really good one back to Calcutta, India. But if the Exercises are important and I have to stay, I might be stuck there for another two or three days. Does anyone have an idea of what the Closing Exercises are, and how important they are?

I'm guessing it's just a coincidence and that there are just more people going to Ojai that frequent this site.

Also, does anyone if they e-mail you after receiving your enrollment forms and tuition? A local group sent the tuition separately and I just want to make sure they got it.

I just met up with some of my SSP friends on a college "accepted student days" sort of visit this weekend, and we went and got lunch together and reminisced for a few hours. Actually there have been a bunch of similar mini reunions in the past couple of weeks. A year from now, I hope all of you are choosing your colleges and meeting up with your best SSP friends.

As for the closing excersizes, as long as you finish your orbit determination report and turn it in, I doubt they'd try to deny your alumni status or anything if you missed the last day or whatever. However, I wouldn't ever advise anyone to miss any of SSP.

Oh, and the same number of students go to each location: 36.

Thanks a lot bananagirl314, I'll keep that in mind. But what I meant was, what exactly happens on the morning of the last day, around two hours before the students catch their flights and go home? I thought that that time was just like some sort of parent-teacher interaction or something. Which means that it is pointless for me to stay there (since my parents won't be there anyway, the trip from India is too long!!). So am I going to miss anything if I leave two or three hours earlier than the others?

I'm on the alt list still... I hope I get in but it seems kind of unlikely. =/

ps... there a group for both ojai and socorro on fbook so...

Flippy, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

to socorro people: anyone play holdem? my friend let me borrow his ridiculously awesome poker set and totally forgot i had them.. haha hope he doesnt notice -_-

I guess I didn't get in.. The guy said he'd tell us if we got in within 2 weeks about 2 weeks ago.

Ahhh well. Have fun. I think I'm just going to take a math class at the community college and work on my current research at Jisan Research Institute (I was thinking about quitting if I got into SSP).

Flippy, I wouldn't assume that. I think you recieve a notice becuae a guy at my school as waitlisted last year when he applied early, but he recieved a rejection letter with the normal applicant.

I think this means you are still on the waiting list.

junior from CT here
I got into Ojai

Son got into Ojai (from NJ) but he doesn't do Facebook or CC, so you'll just have to wait to meet him!

This thing is rigged. Where are all the Socorro people? I'm guessing that at least half of the people going to Ojai this summer are on CC.

haha it's about half :P

siusplau.. I'm from NJ and going to Ojai too.. did you guys get plane tickets yet? could we possibly travel together? my parents are a bit... uneasy about me traveling alone.

Has anybody else on the alternate list heard anything from Bowdon? I'm still waiting. I probably will not get in but I still haven't completely lost hope. I don't think that no word from him necessarily would mean a rejection.

By the way I'm from MA and this is my first post on CC.

09xoxo--We are looking into flights now, but haven't purchased tkts. yet. There's a possibility we will go with him in order to visit family in the area. Either way, you should definitely travel together to Van Nuys. Even if the flights aren't the same, the early person can wait in the terminal until the second person arrives, and then go on the bus together. When we make a decison--we'll let you know!
