so... the decisions come in waves? I mean, do they send all the decissions they have made at once? or... idk, i'm getting pretty nervous.
btw, narcissa, I applied about the same time you did...

For Socorro people:

Socorro has swing-dancing AND trips to White Sands National Park at sunset AND Sloan Digital Sky Survey AND giant gorillas AND spur-of-the-moment techno parties at the observatory (which is decidedly awesome regardless of your attitude towards the music genre itself). So, yeah. You're not missing much. :)

Wait, giant gorillas? Like real, huge, live primates? That's impressive.

oh god. i'm impartial... but if i had to choose, i'd be antiduck. you know.. i was close friends with both j and i... kinda tilts the boat to one side... ;)

but OJAI >>>>>>> soccorro
list of reasons why: gorgeous campus, ojai foundation, shopping trip, meeting hippies, Caltech, JPL, BEACHHHH (famous ones too: carpenteria, santa barbara...)... and you'll be in on the 50th year celebrations.

and we host our own parties :D (and crash the random ppl who are living there's.. but that's another story)

Ah, but Socorro also has incredible landscape (at least, if you're most familiar with East Coast swamps and strip malls), not to mention huge, impressive thunderstorms with yellow skies (ignore the possible implications that might have on observing :P), ancient ruins, dancing in the street with a mariachi band, an entire college campus practically to ourselves for most of the session (which is good because you spend most nights outside until at least 2.....and it gets steadily later as the program goes on), and, yes, a giant gorilla. Oh, and we also have Walmart, which might not seem like a big deal until you realize that NO other stores in a 100-mile radius have any copies of the seventh Harry Potter book.

Incredible landscape at Ojai too... mountains in the background... no rain.. ever.. rarely clouded out for observing. OJAI FOUNDATION in the background (pm me if you're going to ojai). the entire campus IS to ourselves.. minus one or two teachers that live there. people can have sleepovers on the road (just don't tell the teachers) and town trips into Ojai ... which has a movie theater (we saw harry potter and knocked up), a bookshop, a toy shop, and 1204970194712 other stores... beach trips to big places (already mentioned) but these towns have like... every other place u wanna shop at.. we went into urban outfitters, sushi places, jamba juice <33, staples, vans (like stop and shop), etc. and there was some fair in santa barbara when we went one time..

Damnit guys, deadline is over. Any way you can still apply and get it despite deadlines being passed.

Okay. If you go to Socorro, you do have to reconcile yourself to the fact that you are smack dab in the middle of nowhere. But then again- this is astronomy camp, and the skies, especially if you drive a few minutes away from campus or up the mountain to the observatory, are spectacular. And they're not always stuck with four straight weeks of cloudy weather and rain. :)

I thought the deadline was March 21st????

Btw, I applied and my gpa/test scores aren't that high.
However, I believed I wrote really good essays. Do you think that they would accept me based on good essays and decent gpa/test scores?

I'm a junior btw

Yes, it says the 21st and I plan on mailing it tomorrow.

Also, does anybody know if I can arrive there 2 days early? My parents are leaving for vacation just two days before the start date, and I was wondering if they could arrange transportation. Anybody been through this situation before?

Sorry, gonna bump this question, which I posted earlier...

I read somewhere that they extended the deadline last year--what are the chances of that happening this year?

the deadline isn't until march 21st! riGht?!

Yeah, it's March 21st. But I was wondering about the chances of it being extended; someone posted about that happening last year.

Did anyone write anything for question # 5 and 6? (the broader context and factors/circumstances). Just curious

i did for 5 i think. it mentioned english as second language and i said yes to that.

I did, about the commute I make to school and my family situation.

I mentioned the second language thing in an earlier essay, and just put 'no.' as my answer.

i wrote about english as a second language and the fact that my school doesn't offer AP or IB or any other kind of accelerate learning program... hope it helps :S

Jules13, last year I wrote the exact same thing as you. It obviously helped.

But even leaving out questions 5 and 6 don't really kill your chances, though obviously the more information they have the better.

And classof09 mentioned that Ojai has 1204970194712 shops. Don't overrepresent things, classof09. The fact is that Ojai has only 1204970194710 shops. Better than one WalMart within a hundred miles though :D.

And Ojai has hills and desolate trails and romantic rugged landscapes and lonely meadows. At Ojai you feel as though you are isolated in the middle of nowhere with only the most amazing group of kids you'll ever meet and great teachers and TAs. At Ojai you have the best food in the world, and the grandest soccer field and theater too. Ojai has the best of both sides - the lonely seclusion needed for astronomy and the proximity to - I ask you - Los Angeles, where you can get pretty much ANYTHING (except swearword-spouting ducks, GOD I searched everywhere for them). You get to go to the sea, you get to go up in the hills to lonely observatories, you get to use the instrument Edwin Hubble used himself. And most of all, you get to watch the stars every night, because it is CLEAR. Unlike Socorro :D.

Fact remains that wherever you go, Ojai or Socorro, you will get to watch the stars and create some of the very best memories you'll ever have. Second fact: Ojai >>>>> Socorro.

QED

SSP sounds awesome! =D

Just one question though. Why is their administration office in a residential area? Why not an official building?
