Summer Science Program (SSP)

Don't overrepresent the soccer field.. I have scratches from the weeds/grass/whatever there. But playing soccer and frisbee and softball and ... water balloons? AND THE SLIPNSLIDE!!!

Hehe as far as I remember you were pretty scared about sliding down that. But yeah it was awesome. And the water balloons - OMG :D

And the observation sessions? Ask our team, we knew everything that went on at 3 in the morning - we were up pretty much the whole night towards the end :)

classof09, are you taking a BIG break from facebook? Haven't heard from you in like forever!

yeah about that...
junior year is seriously not the most funnest(laugh at my grammar, the grammar police (a from team1) isn't here) experience. there's so much work to be done all the time and third marking period grade slump has gotten me worried. i have a short break this weekend, and i'm spending it catching up on work :/
i promiseeeee i'll get on replying to everyone... sometime in the future..

Hmm, how was the food at Socorro?

I'm torn between which place I want to mark as the preferred location. Socorro has a more convenient date for me, but I kind of want to go to California.

I don't know about Socorro, but Ojai food is AMAZING. As in... I should've gained 12094712947 lb there.. I even ate the spinach- that's sad.

just a question, but why is their administrative office located in NC and the program is in NM or CA?

The food in Socorro was perfectly fine; it might not have had quite the same resources as Ojai, but you could ask them to cook pretty much anything. Lots of Mexican food! Seriously, though, the academic load eventually gets so intense (although its nothing compared to the incredible level of fun in the social experience) that we all literally lost 10 pounds. I had to go back to 8 hours of ballet a week after three months of nothing besides trekking between the dorms and the computer lab, and expected to feel like my English teacher, who looks remarkably similar to Jabba the Hut... Anyway, the food's good and you're so busy you probably wouldn't care even if it weren't. :)

AND SOCORRO HAS THE VLA.

Oh yeah. You know that your secret passion in life is to take a picture of yourself looking like Jodi Foster, sitting on a canyon in the New Mexico desert, staring off into space with a large pair of headphones with the largest radio telescope array in the world behind you.

I'm sure Ojai is a wonderful location, and like others have said, you'll have a fantastic time regardless of where you are.

But Socorro has the VLA. :D

Oh, and I think Mr. Bowman lives in NC. Hence the incredible banjo-playing....if you go this summer, ask him to play.

Wow I didn't know he played the banjo. He plays incredible foosball though, dunno if Socorro-ians have found that out :D

I agree with both thestralnerd and classof09 though, the food is AWESOME, at least in Ojai. And all of us would have gotten about twice as fat as before, if it had not been for the exhilarating workload. Working your youknowwhats off till four in the morning and then getting up at eight for the day's class does not improve one's beauty, or increase weight for that matter.

But I promise you, Ojai or Socorro, you'll have the experience of your life. And you'll want to go back again and again. (Though Ojai still has a slight edge over Socorro in - let's see - just about everything :D)

Anyone know approximately when the second wave of decisions should come? I submitted my application a more than two weeks ago, and I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait much longer.

i got my confirmation on 28.02 and i'm currently going crazy waiting for my decision:P
has anyone received any news about the admissions lately?

btw, does it take longer for the decision to come out if you applied for fin. aid too?

I just got my registration packet today, eep, I only have 10 days to convince my parents to shell out some serious dough!

Only 10 days? Is that a requirement from SSP or from something else?

do they notify us when they've received our applications via email or anything? or will we not get any feedback until decisions come?

They sent me an email that my application had been received and was complete.

how long does it usually take to receive confirmation?

I got my confirmation the 6th of March and had sent the application on the 3rd, So it was just a few days for me.

lol I have the same problem, Ducktape --;

@ dtl42: I got my acceptance ~2 weeks after the first deadline. So unless it's rolling admissions, then you probably have to wait ~2 weeks from now since the 2nd deadline was yesterday. btw did you apply to Socorro or Ojai? :)

I don't know much about this program so don't take this offensively but why is SSP so highly regarded on this board? It costs 3000, it has a pretty high acceptance rate ~30% and from what I know, people don't really do research they just learn astronomy. Why SSP in the same class as programs like RSI, TASP, Jackson Labs, Clark Scholars that pay for students to go and sometimes give them a stipend?

i really think ssp has earned its right to be among these top programs.
it probably has a high acceptance rate because there are less ppl applying to it than to the other programs... and there are more spots available
you do have to make a project by the end of the camp (tracking down an asteroid) which can be pretty interesting.
did i forget to mention it has a long standing tradition?- it was launched in 1959!
as for the money problem, it offers financial aid plus travel aid<- it's the only summer program i found that offers students who need it 500$ to buy their tickets.
the other programs are great, but this is just as good... or even better (RSI doesn't have funds for international students)
:)
