Summer Science Program (SSP)

Lethal_Teapot, you could probably call them, they would understand that you have travel concerns and need a decision.

Its been almost 4 weeks for me now and I'm starting to lose my mind.

You should mail them, you have a case. Do us all a favour that way. And anyway, I remember for the "is your application complete" emails, they had received and logged mine within two days of receiving my courier (I mailed them and found out), but I didn't get the official email until 7 days later. Quote: "We normally log the applications only every few days, which delays notification to applicants". I wonder if they're doing the same nonsense with the acceptance emails.

Unfortunately for me it's only just been 3 weeks today. So I might have to shut up.

i don't know, it's kind of crappy... they said 3-4 weeks. last year they had 3 waves of decisions by this date, if i'm not wrong...
anyway, i'm not sending them another email, i've already nagged them with the application completion email, so i don't want to look like a psycho:P
plus, i don't want do get a response saying: "yeah, why were you in hurry, you got rejected anyway"

that would suck...

i just got an offer from an intership and their asking for my answer, so i'm probably going to email SSP tomorrow...

to pass the time, why dont we all share essays or something

crap... i sent in my apps on fastest delivery the day before final deadline xD

and no email that said apps complete...

crap...

i just emailed them... we see what happens.

Yeah... be careful, my confirmation ended up in my junk mail pile. =O
Luckily I found it. lol

loool thx for telling me that. i just checked my spam folder and there's the confirmation together with bowdon's reply that he sent it several days ago and it prolly went into the spam folder.

would u rather go to this or WTP?

and this thread needs to be more active... so... let's do share essays xD

or at least little parts...

what interesting research questions did you guys pose? I got black holes and galaxies.

interesting topics: me too! 0.o

I hardly remember what I wrote:P
All I know was that those word limits killed me :(

narcissa:
i'd definitely go to this. wtp seems a little...dumbed down? it's for people who aren't really sure what they're going to major in, or atleast, not sure if it's going to be a science, but are good at it.

this is for the hardcore science/math kids.

just fyi since you seem antsy (and I would be too haha). You should get decisions around april 10 unless 2nd round takes a lot longer. The 2 deadlines were ~1 month apart and 1st round was in on march 10.

You guys sound like you wrote really specific/good essays. Mine were sort of broad and really horrendous... I'm going to be the dumbest one there :(

If I had to choose between wtp and ssp (which I don't) then I would choose ssp because physics/astronomy > eecs/mech e for me. just choose what you're most interested in spending your summer doing :)

Sigh. My 'interesting topics' were particle physics, dark matter, and thermoelectricity. Everything I know about them is quite simplified, because my only real interest is math.

It's actually not safe to post whole paragraphs. You never know when you might want to re-use the text, and god forbid someone who likes your ideas has shamelessly cut and paste whole paragraphs for his/her own application. Then the reviewers feed the apps through some software and wolah! You look like you've plaigarised. I've heard stories like that.

my sister is in MIT and she thought wtp was cool. It's only for US kids though. SSP is more selective, atleast going by SAT math scores.

so do SSP officials read these treads? or can i post the answer they gave me without being afraid that they will figure out who I am?
anyway, good answer... happy happy joy joy :D (and that's all you're getting :P)

hmm but i think wtp deemphasizes SAT scores, but they do reject "overqualified" ppl.

Man i am an alternate :(. Whats the number of alternates this year? how many usually get in? Do i still hve a chance or should i just give up? Man i really want to do this program.
