@ secshisuhee: I have that fear too! But then I got my packet, so...I guess it's not as scary anymore.

Oh, I got my packet about two days ago? On Friday, I think, and I'm in CA.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed for my packet tomorrow...

if not.

good bye world.

hahahahahahaha

I got my packet Thursday, but that's probably because I live 5 minutes away from where they're mailing them. :-P

Don't worry, secshisuhee. I bet you'll get it tomorrow. :-)

By the way, does anyone know why their office is in North Carolina? Seems a bit random...

I bet it's Mr. Bowdon's house.
Anybody want to drive up there and tell him hi for me?

hahahaha

that would be creepy.
but it sounds like something i would do.
afterall, i know where my physics and my english teacher live. i turn in homework late all the time hahahahahaha

uh...yes. i meant saturday.

i hadn't realized that it was past midnight.

and, like a.small.prayer, i live in cali.

but i live in texas...

im in MD and i still dun have my packet...

I understand that you need to write a program that will determine the orbit of the asteroid around the sun. Does this require that you already have a decent knowledge of computer programming? I'm just curious...

^yes i think you do need to have a decent knowledge of compsci.

I got my packet and I'm in NJ! but i really don'tthink they make mistakes. I wouldn't be worried, if you're really actually worried.

Then again, i think i'm going to turn this down =( sorry all! Any waitlisted girls?

^ Ok, so for those who don't study computer science at school, would they have to try and learn the programming language (not sure which one they use to make the software) on their own?

erm... this programming language is quite different from Java (what I'm relatively adapt at)...

Vpython:

VPython

for 3D modeling... the site says:"3D Programming for Ordinary Mortals."

go watch the instructional videos on how to use it... it should be easy lol

We get an introductory lesson to Python, and Python itself isn't too hard a language to learn. It's actually... probably the easiest language the learn. They'll give you a printed manual. READ IT! Even if you don't think you'll need it, it'll help you.

Ah right. I thought it would be a programming language more along the lines of Java, which would obviously be much harder to learn over such a short period.

I know a little bit of Python programming, and it's definitely the simplest I've come across. Java is much more complicated, and I thought that it would be quite extraordinary if all the students attending SSP were accomplished Java (or something like Java) programmers!

I have absolutely no clue what computer programming/languages are. Like. Absolutely none. I know as little as I could possibly know. I bet my grandparents know more than me and they don't use computers.

yeah, same here. ABSOLUTELY no programming. i used to do logo from 3rd to 6th grade, and pascal in 7th, which was really long ago, and not really programming.

but. i've been playing around with vpython this week (yay spring break!), and it's extremely easy. does these gorgeous physics simulations.

narcissa: too bad. what're you turning this down for?

sci-fry: which campus?

Sorry to go off track...but did those of you receive the packages apply for fin. aid? I didn't get mine yet :S

didn't apply to fin aid

blue_sky,

you can email mr. bowdon and ask him.

i did, and i got even more money than i asked for! Alright! :)

hey, any of you other waitlisted applicants get some type of correspondence from SSP yet? i feel like i'm sitting in the dark here. i have no clue what's going on.
