Summer semester requirement

Is it okay to go to a community college for the summer semester requirement?

Also, are there any financial aid options for summer semesters?

The reason I’m curious is because I heard something about people going to community college over the summer and I’m not sure if this was the reason they did so, or if it was just for in hopes of a certain class being easier.

Nope, it doesn’t count toward the summer requirement. Folks do it (and usually need an UF adviser to approve) because it convenient (they are working back home, so want to take one or two classes), or to avoid taking a class at UF (like ACG 2021, Introduction to Financial Accounting, which is very rigorous).

In general, UF doesn’t like it, but some folks still do it (if they can get it approved).

Darn. Do you know of any financial aid options that cover summer semesters? All of scholarships and grants and what not don’t cover summer.

I think you can take class at any Florida state college and have it count towards summer. Doesn’t need to be at UF. So If you live in south Florida and wanted to take a summer class at FAU or Broward college it looks like it would count toward the summer requirement. Also check to see if their is an online class from UF you can take. This is from the catalogue:

“Students who enter a state university in Florida with fewer than 60 credits must earn at least nine credits before graduation during summer terms at State University System (SUS) institutions. However, students who earn six credits through UF-sponsored, UF exchange or approved SUS study-abroad programs during one or two summer terms completely satisfy the summer-term enrollment requirement. In addition, credits earned through any of the study-abroad programs approved by UF during a summer term count toward satisfaction of the summer-term enrollment requirement. Students who bring 60 or more transfer credits to UF, regardless of institution, will be exempt from completing the summer requirement at UF.”

^ The way I read the requirement, the student needs to attend a summer term at a SUS institution (there are twelve Universities in the system).

I know a lot of people will take very difficult classes like accounting at a community college in order to save their GPA. As far as summer credit goes I know people that fulfilled their summer credit through study abroad. Hope that helps!

In order for a course at a different college to count towards the summer requirement the college has to be a 4 year accredited college/university. I’m a student at UF currently and I plan on taking some college courses at home over the summer so I made sure to ask my advisor which colleges would be acceptable and that is what he told me.

Another option you have is to do an internship or research. They will get rid of all your summer requirement and as a bonus they look excellent on resumes and you usually get paid. I would highly suggest doing this over summer if you are given the opportunity.
