yoo wat part of westchester?? i go to JFK in somers... nd yehh gglock im missing the last 2 WEEKS of school. everythings gettin screwed up cuz of these seminars.

ohh nvm i see ur from mamaroneck.

Yeah i wish they were the end of june or something. O well.

You looking at any colleges in NY? I want to go to Embry Riddle (if I don't get into USAFA), but some other schools to look at are Dowling and Vaugn (at La Guardia). Manhattan has ROTC.

Who's your ALO? Mine's Gabrielli. We probably have different ones.

yeh mines cunningham. hes a major in the AF reserves. but yeh ive been looking at embry riddle too. besides a military academy u cant rly beat a place in that offers aviation in a vacaction-like city if u ask me. nd ive checked out vaughn a cuple times but im probly not gonna end up going there.

I think the same thing. Without sounding cocky or anything, I think i'm too good for Vaugn and Dowling. I'd rather go to a better school.

My ALO is also Major in reserves. I met him last year at Military day and i'll see him again at Military may in a month. He did our interview on the phone. I'm gonna try to get in better shape before meeting him again haha. Maybe a 6 mile run tomorrow morning will do.

yes exactly. vaughn seems like the last resort for someone who wants to be a pilot but cant get in anywhere else.

Cool, a bunch of NYers. :) ...usafa21astr, no I haven't gotten an acceptance e-mail yet, I'm hoping for one soon! I'm missing the English Regents and the last two days of school... but I'd definitely rather be in CO. Is anyone else looking at RIT, RPI or another tech school with AFROTC if they don't get into the Academy? Also, how long after your interview with your ALO did you receive the acceptance e-mail?

Don't worry, english regents is a joke. I took it in january and got a 96.

i got my acceptance e-mail about a week ago for session b. i never had an interview with my alo, i just never got around to calling him. im not trying to sound awesome or anything but im just saying that because im curious how much an interview helps in getting accepted

That's like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop. The world may never know. :)

But seriously, ALOs are there as a barrier to weed out the people who just look good on paper from the people who actually have the attitude and commitment to make it as a cadet. I'm pretty sure my interviews helped me out quite a bit, but it probably varies for everyone. Some ALOs and MOCs will go the extra mile for you if they see that you're an awesome candidate in an interview. Other ALOs and MOCs just do what they have to do and be done with it. It just depends on where you are and who you have and how outstanding you are. I think. ;) Basically don't screw up and present yourself well and your ALO will be an asset to you. Good luck! And have fun at seminar! It's going to be a blast.

Yea that's exactly what my ALO said redhead89, he said that one time he interviewed this candidate, and on paper the guy looked fantastic, but when my ALO interviewed the guy, he realized he wouldn't be able to handle it. Yea they definitely have that power. I felt my interview went well, and my ALO said he was going to recommend me, but now I have to be patient... haha something that I need to work on.

I dido, both of the previous comments abouit ALOs. :)

I was never contacted for an interview... should I have been the one to call? I emailed my (completely incompetent) high school guidance counselor for the name of my district ALO but she never got back to me.

If you haven't been contacted for an interview yet then I would definitely advise you to take the initiative and call your ALO yourself. If your school counselor hasn't gotten back to you with the ALO's contact information, then you should call Academy Admissions first thing tomorrow and get the phone number. Call your ALO right away and introduce yourself, explain that you want to go to the Academy and are applying to summer seminar, and ask if he would be available to meet with you for an official interview. Or even to just ask questions. It seems like most ALOs love to talk to kids about the Air Force Academy.

And remember that even if you don't get into summer seminar, there are things you can do to make yourself more competitive for actual admissions. Make sure you're getting as close to straight A's as possible, taking challenging classes, running for student government or a club officer (both would actually be good), working your butt off to do well on the CFA, volunteering... Don't get discouraged that you haven't heard back from them yet. Focus on the things you can change and keep working towards your goal. :)

Also, if you have the time and opportunity, think about becoming involved in some sort of military-oriented program (ie. Civil Air Patrol, JROTC, even Boy Scouts could help). I'm pretty sure that CAP is what got me accepted to the Summer Seminar, and I only joined a few months ago. So don't think that it's too late to become involved with any of these programs .

It never hurts to try to contact your ALO, but don't be upset if he's not available. He will certainly call you if USAFA requires it. Many people are accepted to SS without being interviewed or contacted by an ALO. If he never calls, it just means that you are really, really good or really, really bad.

Just got word from my ALO that I got into SS. I didn't get official word yet but I had asked for Session A.

Congratulations!!

I'm already in Boy Scouts; trying to get my Eagle project started right now, two merit badges left so I WILL have Eagle by the time I enter any college. I didn't think my stats were that bad, I'm pretty sure I have better scores than some people who've been accepted already but I'm also guessing they're not competitive enough (given my district) to bypass an interview. I had better stats than some people who got into the West Point SS and I was rejected.
