I was just accepted to the USAFA summer seminar and will attend session B. I was wondering if anyone knew about the admissions process with those who went to SS, does it help out much? Are you assumed to get into the AFA if you went to the SS? My liasions offficer said that the incoming class is made up with 50% being former SS participants, any information would help thanks.

Is getting into Summer Seminar a good sign? Sure. Does it mean you'll get into the Academy? No. Work hard senior year.

This question has been answered many times. Just a fyi.

Makes you look pretty good, acceptance guaranteed? not at all.

Many of us here were not accepted to SS but are current cadets.

I went to SS... I do not have an acceptance (I'm hoping soon though! fingers crossed). At summer seminar though, the admissions briefing did state that many who accepted SS did go to the academy (I'm not sure of the percentage though) or had the potential to. Be advised that many students go to multiple summer seminars.

Congrats and good luck! But heed PETKO's advice. Nothing can really promise admission into the academy.

Here's an ALO's perspective.

IF you are an SS selectee, the AFA (or for that matter any SA) has a serious interest in you because:

a. You meet all the academic criteria for admission
b. Your resume is pretty amazing
c. Your self-reported information is pretty amazing

BUT...your entire SS application is entirely what YOU tell them; nothing is checked, verified, analyzed.

So...what's that mean?

It means that next year you will pretty much be guaranteed to be sent an early candidate notification. Even without a nomination. Don't fall all over yourself, it only means that they "think" you'll probably get a nomination and they're giving you the opportunity to get the paperwork done early.

From that point, EVERYTHING will be analyzed by folks like ME, an ALO, other folks at USAFA, etc...etc...etc... We'll look everywhere: I interview teachers, coaches, ministers/rabbi's/imam's/priests; usually BEFORE I interview YOU. You name it, I will go looking. Why? Because I need to be able to tell the AFA who/what you are! What makes you "tick?" Why are you special? And so on.

Does being a former SS attendee guarantee you anything beyond this? NOPE. Not a thing. I've seen SS attendees that didn't even get a nomination because the folks they competed with ranked higher. I've seen them not get the appointment, even though "on paper" I was sure they would. And some SS folks drop the process after SS because they decide it's not for them.

Now that it seems like I've rained on your parade, let me say this...

IF you were good enough to get selected for SS...then I think you probably have what it takes to be appointed to the academy of your choice. The competition will be FIERCE but you've already shown you're an achiever...

So...head to SS with a fully open mind; gain all you can from it, and then if you're SURE this is for you, NAIL the next year and get that appointment!!

Just my $1.47 worth.
