Question on significance of Summer Seminar...

I am aware that the Summer Seminar can help you gain admission to the Academy, especially if you do well. But if you don't attend, will it put you at that much of a disadvantage compared to people who did attend? I will be in Europe the first few weeks of summer and cannot attend any of the sessions.

our son applied to NASS, but did not get in- and he did receive an appointment for the class of 2010.

What is more important, IMHO, is that you take any opportunity offered to visit and STAY on the yard if at all possible. Our son did a sports camp for a week, which afforded him a stay in Bancroft and a glimpse at plebe summer; he also did a CVW when invited during senior year. Both proved very beneficial in his decision process when it came time for his final choice.

JH --No one here really knows whether there is a disadvantage by not attending unless they have sat on the Academy admissions board. My son attended NASS and AFSS and he received appointments to both. If you cannot attend, then I suggest that you have personal contact with the Academy through other means such as a sport camp or by shadowing a student. Our BGO made arrangements for my son to shadow a student for a day which I believe also may have helped.

According to http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/selection.htm
"We will automatically process all summer seminar applicants as applicants to the Naval Academy upon completion of the Summer Seminar selection process. There is no need to submit an additional preliminary application. Due to limited space in the Summer Seminar Program, we highly recommend students not selected continue pursuing admission to the Academy. Summer Seminar is a competitive program and can only accommodate 600 students in each of the three sessions (1,800 total)."

So, drawing from that, I think not being able to go to NASS isn't a disadvantage. I think NASS is more of a way for you to check out the academy for a week and have some fun with other possible future classmates.
