Summer Service Learning Program through ND?

Anyone have experience with this program? My daughter is thinking about going to Kansas City for 8 weeks to give academic support to young students through the program. I was just wondering if anyone has advice.

Our local club has traditionally sponsored a summer service student at a local health clinic. These students are generally pre-med students. It allows the student to earn approximately $2500 for the summer and gain valuable hands on experience. The local club underwrites approximately 50% of the student’s stipend. We had a second student last year, a chemistry major, who worked answering phones at a local legal aid office. There was not enough work to keep him busy 8 hours a day, and it was not related to his major. He did not have the type of learning experience that the pre-med students enjoy at the clinic.

I would say it depends upon the type of summer job and whether or how it relates to the student’s intended major or career interest.

It does give the studend a chance to meet and learn from local ND alumni in the club sponsoring the summer service project.

In general, I think this is an excellent program and perhaps a way to get a summer job when the economy is weak.
