Has anyone here been to a UChicago Summer Session or applied to the 06 Session? Are they really fantastic and worth the money (I'll be coming out of state - and that's a lot of room and board) or is your summer better spent close to home doing something that isn't quite such a fiscal drain?

What kind of students usually apply? Do they take a lot of out of state students? Is it impossible to get any aid?

hey noctua, i'm doing summer session as well, intensive language study, i've heard it helps with admissions.. i applied and they got back to me with in the a day of recieving my app.. i applied in feb though... they do reject ppl tho, but it's pretty rare they'll reject you.. you can get aid, bc i saw a fin aid sheet in the packet.. my dad works at argonne though so they paid for half, but i am also commuting so it's a bit cheaper... also, chicago is pretty indifferent about regional location...

Nada - the app is due on the 15th, and even though my essay and everything is ready to go, I probably won't be applying. =(

I just don't have $4600. I'll probably stay home and take a summer job. Have fun with the Arabic! If I do apply (what's the best way to make $4600 magically appear?) it will be for the Egypt Language Lit program. Score.

Tuition: $2,310
Required Health Fee: $155
Optional Health Insurance: $563
Housing: $1320
Housing Program Fee: $275 - ***? $275 to show me where the bathrooms are?

Total: $4623

Summer experience at the U of C? Of course, priceless.

It /is/ more than my trip to Europe last summer, which was three weeks long and took three years of summer work to save for. >.<

Maybe I will apply. I just can't seem to find the information about when the payments are due and what the refund policy is. Most likely though, I'll stay home, get a job and possibly a car, and start reading Morris Klein's calc book and probably give up in the fourth chapter. Summer Rox!

It is, honestly, my #1 choice for the next 4-some years of my life, so why not go? I just can't seem to find any other colleges that attract me... =(

While the thought is on my mind, and if anyone knowledgeable reads this... are there any schools comparable to UChicago in environment (intellectual, physical, and otherwise) and quality? What kind of schools do people who really love UoC even consider?

thats only for one class! im taking two classes (could take 3 for the same price) for 7 weeks in germany itself for about $3500. of course it depends on your goal. if you are looking to take foreign language, you should certainly experience it firsthand, even if you know nothing.

as far as your "trip," did you take classes? if not, why are you even comparing them?

No, there were no classes. We were all German-speaking students, and the school organized the trip... probably with the goal of improving our speaking ability. It depended on the student. Most of the travelers abused the fact that most Germans speak English, even though it was obvious that you received much better treatment if you at least tried to speak German before you asked "Sprechen Sie English?"

We were not stationary either - we were in Germany, France, Austria, and Italy... but the bulk of our time was spent in Germany.

Sorry for comparing them if they are not that similar. The Chicago course is so expensive because (I'm assuming?) it's an "Insight" course... apparently there is research and hands-on learning involved. I don't know. I don't think I will be applying.

i actually considered going to Chicago for a summer because i have to do another summer term, but i saw the price and figured its not worth it. i probably would have as a HS senior, but that would just be a disguised anxiousness to see what college is like (typical CC feeling i suppose).

now that i see college for what it is, i would only do a summer in school if i needed credit or had a very specific goal (eg. wanted to learn enough french to get an engineering internship in france the following summer). otherwise you can do research and get paid for it, instead of paying for it, or work/study abroad along with other cooler options. ich werde in Berlin bleiben ;)
