Hi, I'm an international student looking to complete a couple courses during the summer in California. Both Cal and UCLA are pretty good schools, and although they are different, LA and the Bay area both offer great things to do.

Have you been to either school's summer session? How would you describe the academics? Student life? What kind of people go there during the summer? Living there (as in living in LA during the summer vs. SF)?

I know summer 2014 is still a long time away, but I'm planning to finish my gap year with summer school to get "back in the game". If you've been to either thanks for telling me how it went! If you can compare, it would be a great addition!

Three-time UCLA summer session here. The social life at UCLA is there if you look for it, but I get the feeling that a number of summer students just go to class. I’ve met students in my class that are from other institutions, and don’t really seem to be interested in the social aspect, since they probably go to class, then go straight home. A lot of summer students commute, as did I. The summer courses are usually rumored to be easier than the equivalents during the academic hear.

Even so, a lot of events still go on during the summer at UCLA, so if you’re looking for things to do, you can find them.

Also been at UCLA for the last 3 summers. The past two summers I didn’t have much on my plate so it was really chill and I had a lot of time to relax and do whatever. This summer I’m quite busy so I’ve only been going out every once in a while.

Yeah there are students from other schools, like USC. Wooden is also less crowded and there will be the occasional athlete sighting. Still movie premieres in Westwood, and the incoming freshmen attending orientation. I do enjoy that there are a lot less people around to be honest, it’s a stark contrast to the regular school year.
