Summer Session Questions [URGENT!]

I have a few questions regarding this year’s Summer Session.

I am a strong student with a very high Grade Point Average but low SAT/ACT Scores (1120/1750, 25) who just discovered that a summer session existed.

I have quite a lot of interest in the Academy, but I need to know a few things.
-Obviously I will be tested physically, but I can only run about two-miles without getting very tired. I am somewhat in shape - but I am definitely not the strongest or the fastest person if you know what I mean.
-Is it way to late to apply? I probably could not convince by parents and get everything together for about a week. I would be able to apply by the end of February - Is this too late?

I have really strong ec’s and community service. Is the physical aspect just too much? What really goes on while you are there?

Thanks! Your help is so appreciated!

If I remember correctly, the deadline for Summer Seminar is March 15, so you have enough time. By now, I think some slots have been given away but you still have a chance. I think what the panel goes for is how well-rounded you are. If you have a bit of everything and still have a high GPA, then I'm sure you'll be fine. Summer Seminar's a blast. You don't need to be physically fit to go to Summer Seminar, but I'm not saying you should slack off or anything. You'll take a practice test there and it'll show you where you are. You have a lot of time to prepare since you're a junior in high school so start now if you haven't. Get the running thing down because eventually, you'll have to do it in boots. Get good at pushups and flutter kicks.. definitely the most popular. Once you get the pushups down, go for diamond pushups. And do pullups, too.

Does anyone know EXACTLY how much physical activity is required at SS?

How many miles or running, etc?

I'd say it is a little bit on the late side.

Never hurts to try..

You will exercise but they don't intend on killing you. You wont have a CFA before summer seminar only for your application next year. Apply now hte slots will go fast and you don't want to miss it. If you do miss it you can always make a trip during Ac year. They will set you up with a cadet and you should be able to spend the night.

They will do a CFA during summer seminar but don't count the results.

The only real "hard" part is "Doolie for a day," which is optional (but HIGHLY recommended). SS does not have a whole lot of running/PT. I know that I was not in shape for SS.

It didn't have a lot of running. What I remember the most was bear crawling up a hill and running after a golf ball that they hit.

I applied to seminar around this time last year, so you're not too late. Just make sure you hustle your stuff in and don't lolly-gag :) around with it. Summer seminar is lots of fun. As long as you're not morbidly out of shape, as in overweight, you'll be just fine. You should start working on the stuff rtbcadet mentioned right now just so that you're prepared when the real CFA comes around your senior year, but seminar is really not that intense.

For those of you who have no idea what to expect at summer seminar, here you go (sorry, it's really long)...

When you get there on Sunday, there is an optional hike up in the mountains if you get there early enough in the day. Then on Monday (the day that the seminars actually begin), you will have PT before breakfast and then some kind of intramural with your element after seminars. You have 2 seminars per day, one after breakfast, then one after lunch. Tuesday is basically the same schedule. Morning PT consists of running around the terrazzo a couple of times (10 minutes of running max), and then you will line up with your element in the grass and do jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, flutter kicks...that kind of thing. It's really not that intense. Any normal high schooler would do just fine. I'm not trying to downplay the fact that you need to be in shape to attend the Air Force Academy, but it shouldn't be something that you stress out about for seminar. Wednesday you have the same morning PT, but then after your second seminar, "Doolie for a Day" commences, where the cadres treat you like a 4 dig for the afternoon. The idea is to try and emulate what BCT will be like, although I have heard that it doesn't really come close. At the beginning of the Doolie for a Day afternoon, you will stand out in the hallway in front of your room with the rest of your element and do sit ups, push ups, flutter kicks, that kind of thing. Then you march outside and there are 4 stations (I think?) that you must go through. Your element will travel with several other elements from station to station. Two or three of the stations are in the courtyard in the center of the dorm building: one is kind of a mini course that your team competes on against the other elements (you crab walk through the grass and crawl through the sand..not too tough), another one is pushups till you think your arms are gonna fall off (but you'll be okay), and then I think there's a little bit of running. Another station is out in the terrazzo where you just march and stand in a line with your element while the cadres try and make you laugh so that you're no longer standing at attention. It's really fun. Then Thursday is a normal day again with PT, seminars, and intramurals. Then dinner, a speaker, and the dance... oh, the dance... :) Too many guys and not enough girls, that's all I'm going to say. One of the days you will do a practice CFA instead of an intramural, but which day you do the CFA varies according to what element you're in. If you're lucky, you won't have to do the CFA on Thursday when you're all sore from Doolie for a Day. Your arms and back will feel sore, but it won't kill you. You'll do just fine.
