What has been your experience with it? Is it reasonable for me to take 16 credits by taking a 5 credit class and a 3 credit Math class in each of the A & B sessions? Would it make more sense to try to take a 5 credit class in the A session, then a 5 credit class in the B session and take a 3 credit Math for full term for a total of 13 credits?

The issue is trying to add this double major in Math and not being able to take quarters off to allow for this.

If any of you have done this, I'd appreciate the help. Or, if you just happen to know the way that the classes are normally structured so that maybe you can help me know if I should be able to plan this into my academics.

Summer Quarter is the same as the other quarters as far as course content. But there are some differences:

Classes are smaller.

Classes are often (but not always) taught by TA’s rather than profs.

Most important difference: the pace is faster because summer quarter has only 9 weeks vs 11 weeks for the other quarters. The 11th week is exam week in regular quarters, but in summer quarter, final exams are in the last one or two regular classes. So you are actually covering material in 8.5 weeks in summer quarter vs 10 full weeks fall/winter/spring, with no break to study for final exams in summer.

The A-term and B-term schedule is twice as fast as as the full-term summer schedule: 4.5 weeks to cover an entire quarter, including final exams.

So, in general, it makes sense to have a somewhat lighter course load during summer quarter.

It is understandable to take anywhere between 12-18 credits to get the most bang for the bucks. triseradad explained very well about the pace. Speaking from my past experience, you should avoid overloading the credits during summer quarter. I have a friend who taking 18 credits during summer quarter and he ended up dropping half of those courses. I’m not trying to scare you but just wanted to let you know from my experience, if it helps go talk to student advisor.
