How many units are you taking for the summer? I'm going to be taking 16 units at UCSD. 8 during session 1 and 8 during session 2. I think it is going to be a busy 10 weeks. The classes are Math 20C and Phys 2A during first session, and Math 20E and Phys 2B during second session.

Ah… WOW. I’ll be taking 6 a session. 4 units of a serious class and 2 units of some fluff p/np. 6 weeks of a class of UC rigor, without any experience with any UC courses, is not something I want to dive head first into.

I won’t have a job, so I fully intend to spend ample time studying. I really need to get these prereqs out of the way so that I can spend the next summer or two doing internships rather than catching up on classes.

I won’t have a job either, but I wouldn’t take a course load like that. You might be committing GPA suicide. Why haven’t you taken all these lower div. math/science courses prior?

you guys are SO lucky to not have to work!! I have to work full time AND i’m a physics major/pre-med student

Why would it be committing GPA suicide? What is the difference between taking 16 units in two 5 week sessions as opposed to 16 units in a single 10 week session. It is the same exact work load. I understand it is an ample amount of information to digest in a short amount of time, but I’m an engineering major, so if I want to graduate in under three years there are going to be many quarters with really difficult classes taken simultaneously. Furthermore, if I don’t take those classes during the summer then I am still going to have to take them plus two other classes in the fall. If anything, this summer will help me see what it is going to take to be successful at UC. If I get a couple B’s, oh well.

"Why haven’t you taken all these lower div. math/science courses prior? "

I changed my major and don’t feel like staying at community college for another year to finish them. Money is not an issue so I’d rather get a higher quality and more challenging education. Also, I would like to begin doing research soon.

I’m planning to take 12 units at UCLA (8 units first session, 4 units second session).

you guys are intense, i’m only taking one course.

well, also because i figured out that it would probably take me 3 years at UCLA, so i decided to take my time…

Oh, well I guess I’m just used to the semester system. I took 6 semester units in 6 weeks and that wasn’t too bad, but they weren’t physics and calc. I believe on the quarter system 12 units is like 8 on the semester (2 semester units for every 3 quarter units), so 8 quarter units is like 5 units on the semester system, which doesn’t sound so bad for 6 weeks. I guess they distribute material differently in classes in the quarter system? My physics and calc classes are 4 units on the semester system, including labs.

I didn’t really anticipate it being much of a challenge before coming in this thread, but do you guys think that 10 units in one session might be a bit much? I’m only taking a couple of poli sci pre reqs (intro to world politics and comparative politics), so I don’t really anticipate it being all that difficult, but I don’t really know what to expect and I’m still a little nervous about making the transition, so I really don’t know. Looking at the syllabus of the world politics class, the only assignments are the readings, a mid-term, and a final. I won’t be working either so…yeah.

Rypken, I’m an english major and I’m also anticipating a very manageable workload, maybe two or three 5 page papers and one 12 page paper per class.

Literature major = no exams :)

I might go for 16 units over summer

I’m taking 16 units too, 8 units/6 week session, at UCB. But I already have all of the syllabi and I’ve completed some of the reading and hw assignments already so I should still be able to do well. Three of them are my philosophy major prereqs and one of them is for fun.
