So how does this work? Financial aid calculator isn't up yet...do people regularly get a decent chunk to cover summer costs? And what's the rules about registration? Can I sign up for classes in Feb and drop them w/o a fine by a certain date if I change my mind?

i think if you get pell grants you are eligible for summer aid - grants to cover classes (if you take 6 units), loans for living expenses. if you drop all the classes you sign up for, you lose $100 if it’s before the deadline. after the deadline, you don’t get refunds.

i don’t know when the exact deadlines are, but they should be up fairly soon.

You have to be that low income to get any financial aid? I get a Cal Grant and have ~10k EFC (w/ one other sibling in college). Would I be able to get anything? :/

I’m sure you’ll at least be able to get something. Actually, there’s a good chance that it’ll cover all of your registration fees:

“If you received UC grants during the 2009-2010 academic year, you may be eligible for a Summer Fee Grant to cover your summer registration, campus, and course fees. You can check your grant eligibility by using the SummerAid Estimator when it becomes available in early March 2010.”

it says we need 6 units minimum? Is that over the course of the 4 years at berkeley or is it a minimum for one summer session? I don’t think I want to take 6 units…

It’s for one summer, but you can take it over multiple sessions.

so weak
now i have to take 2 4 unit classes unless someone can recommend me better…

take a 2 unit college writing class over the internet. should be a piece of cake.
I took eps80 last summer to get to 6 units and that was do not worth it.

Fin Aid won’t help students with housing in the res halls during summer?

From the Summer Sessions website:

“Cancellation means you are dropping all classes in all sessions before your earliest session begins. The non-refundable cancellation fee is $100.”

I’m thinking of taking a 2 unit science course like eps80, to get to 6 units…what was so bad about it?

Do Regents Scholars who are eligible for financial aid get grants or loans for living expenses?

@birdhouse
eps80 is alright if ur in L&S and are looking to fulfill a science breadth. but it was a lot of work in my opinion (lots of reading, presentations) for a 2 unit class. spent more time in that class than the 4-unit upper div humanities class that I was also taking.
And I wont really call that a science class if you’re someone who’s used to doing a lot of physics problems and are just looking to take some science courses for fun.

Ha, I’m just trying to fulfill an L&S breadth. Hmmm, don’t really want any presentations. Thanks for the info. Anyone take nutri sci 10 over the summer before?

oh yeah, and is it ok to shop and drop? do people do that often in the summer?

dunno about the max units you can take, but shop and drop is fine. just remember that you only have like a week to drop.
